Emmy Award-winning director Dick Carson dies aged 92 after 'brief illness'

Dick Carson died after a brief illness last month at age 92 his family have confirmed.

The family of director and five-time Emmy winner have announced that their loved one passed away on December 19.

It is reported that the younger brother of Johnny Carson died at his home in Studio City, California, after suffering a short illness.

His illness at this time still remains unknown and was not confirmed by his family.

The award winner who worked on The Tonight Show leaves behind his wife Karlyn Carson, two sons Douglas and Christopher, daughter Kathleen Ann Tucker – along with granddaughters Lindsey Ann Ritenour, Melissa Ann Pregler and Chase Alexandra Carson and his great-granddaughter Peyton Jane Ritenour.

Carson career kicked off when he joined Nebraska radio.

Taking his life in a different direction he upped sticks and moved to San Diego where he landed the role of an NBC affiliate KOGO TV.

He worked his way up from the bottom at channel, starting out as “floor man” before transitioning to directing adverts and news.

In 1960, he was on the move again, this time taking up an opportunity to direct children’s TV shows in Los Angeles.

The American television director landed his next big gig when his younger brother Johnny Carson recommended Dick to a New York production team on The Tonight Show.

Carson accepted the role behind the camera while his brother Johnny took centre stage on the US platform.

He remained in the role for seven years before he was on to pastures new again and relocated to California.

His career in television spanned more than 43-years with Carson directing big programmes such as The Don Rickles Variety Show, Get Smart, The Merv Griffin Show and gameshow Wheel Of Fortune for more than 22-years.
