GBBO winner Nadiya Hussain's mum can't stand her cooking – and she gives it away

Telly chef Nadiya Hussain’s mother cannot stand her cooking and gives it away.

The Bake Off winner says Asma Begum can’t hide a look of disappointment when she takes a dish to her house.

The 37-year-old TV chef said her mother will complain the food “needs modifying”.

Speaking on the Off Menu podcast, the cookbook writer said: “[My mum] is not maternal at all.

“I very rarely take anything round for her because she is so judgemental about everyone’s cooking.

“Even as somebody who cooks for a living when I take something round for her, she opens it, she won’t smell it, she will barely look at it and honestly you can see the disappointment in her face.

“She says ‘it’s going to need modifying’ and then she’ll close it and she’ll put it away.

“Then I’ll get a call from one of my sisters saying ‘you know that beef thing that you made, that was delicious.’ I say ‘I gave that to mum’ and she goes ‘yeah she gave that to me.’

“She will [either give it away] or take the English out of it and make it Bengali. Even if I make some bread, she’s like ‘this is too English for me’”.

Nadiya said her mother also “does not care” about her career success.

She said: “[My mum] doesn’t watch anything I’m on. She’s a good old fashioned Indian mum who does not give a damn about what I do.”

The TV cook recently appeared on Kate Garraway’s Life Stories where she opened up about bullying hell.

Viewers were shocked to hear how she struggled growing up in the heart of Luton after she revealed how she was bullied by two fellow students at school.

And the bullying didn’t just include horrible names being screamed across the playground as she explained how she was regularly hit and beaten in the bathroom.

One of the most painful memories included two boys repeatedly slamming her fingers in between a heavy fire door, and forcing her head into a toilet while they repeatedly flushed it.

Turning to a more lighthearted topic, Kate asked Nadiya what the “worst” cake she has ever eaten is.

Nadiya said: “I don’t think I’ve ever eaten a cake that’s horrible.”

Kate told Nadiya that she had taken her cake recipe which she made for the Queen and attempted to bake her a cake, with the help of her son Billy.

The top baker commented that Kate’s sweet treat was “looking a little solid” and joked that it is a “bit of a sword in the stone moment”, but alas it “looks like cake”.
