Harry Potter fans stunned as subtitles reveal what Dudley said to Harry in iconic scene

Harry Potter fans have been left confused after discovering that an iconic scene from the first film has a linguistic question mark.

A clip from the start of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, screened in 2001, when viewers are introduced to the wizard, has resurfaced on social media.

In the TikTok video, Harry’s cousin Dudley Dursley is seen stomping up and down the stairs at their home in Privet Drive to try and wake up Harry, who was sleeping in the cupboard under the stairs, with viewers previously believing he was shouting: “Wake up, Potter!”

However, the clip’s subtitles reveal he is really saying: “Wake up, cousin!”

Potterheads subsequently voiced their bewilderment in a series of comments, with one writing: “It’s Potter. Ain’t no way Dudley called him cousin… cousin would imply Dudley claims him as family not as his live-in whipping boy.”

A second noted: “‘If you think Potter you hear Potter, if you think cousin you hear cousin.”

A third commented: “It was always cousin,” while a fourth added: “I can hear both.”

A bilingual fan has reasoned their way to the answer, stating: “I think it’s ‘cousin’ ’cause also in the Italian translation it says cousin.”

It comes as Warner Bros Discovery signalled that more Harry Potter films could be on their way.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner chief executive David Zaslav said during an investors’ call last week that: “We haven’t had a Superman movie in 13 years. We haven’t done a Harry Potter in 15 years.

“The DC movies and the Harry Potter movies provided a lot of the profits for Warner Bros… over the past 25 years.”
