Inside Florence Pugh's rumoured 'feud' with Harry Styles and Olivia Wilde

American actress and filmmaker Olivia Wilde has cast now-boyfriend Harry Styles in the role of Jack and Academy Award nominee Florence Pugh as Alice in her new movie, Don’t Worry Darling, which is set in the 1950s.

The upcoming movie, which will be released on September 23, follows Jack and his wife Alice, who suspects that her husband is keeping disturbing secrets.

Don’t Worry Darling, which is Olivia’s second movie as a director, will have its fair share of sex scenes as the director told Vogue: “The 1950s get this rap as a very controlled, conservative era, when in fact it was incredibly debaucherous. My grandparents on my mother’s side loved to party.”

The director said she was inspired by movies that were filmed in the 1950’s, stating that they were “really sexy, in a grown-up way.”

She added: “I kept saying, ‘Why isn’t there any good sex in film anymore?’”

When the trailer for Don’t Worry Darling dropped earlier this year, fans were shocked by the explicit sex scenes that were featured in the sneak peek.

In the trailer, there is a raunchy scene where Harry’s character, Jack, performs oral sex on Florence’s Alice.

However, the reception from the trailer seemed to leave Florence unimpressed, later sparking feud rumours between the director and the female lead.

Florence has also recently split from long-term partner and actor Zach Braff, just weeks before the premiere of Don’t Worry Darling.

Here’s everything you need to know about the rumoured feud between the Don’t Worry Darling cast members and director.

Following the release of the Don’t Worry Darling trailer, director Olivia praised the reception that it received on her Instagram account.

Olivia reshared a post from “The Clit Test’s” Instagram account, an online forum that celebrates the acknowledgement of the clitoris, which stated that the trailer had passed ‘the clit test’.

The post read: “TFW there’s a @clit.test pass in the trailer.

“@OliviaWilde showing how it’s done as usual.”

British actor Florence explained in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar that she is not in the movie industry to be reduced to her sex scenes.

She also mentioned that she understands that there would be hype around the movie due to the fact that heartthrob Harry Styles is in the cast.

She said: “Obviously, the nature of hiring the most famous pop star in the world, you’re going to have conversations like that.

“That’s just not what I’m going to be discussing because [this movie is] bigger and better than that. And the people who made it are bigger and better than that.”

Florence’s comments added to speculation that there is an ongoing feud between herself and Olivia, with fans noticing on social media that she hasn’t promoted Don’t Worry Darling much on her pages.

This year, Florence has only shared one post about the movie so far in the run up to its release.

On the Instagram post, which was only shared a week ago, the caption read: “Not everyone gets this opportunity…’ Not long now! Only in theatres September 23rd #dontworrydarling”

The trailer that the actress shared in the social media post also did not include the steamy sex scene.

Last month, Olivia praised the actress on Instagram as she shared a photo from the set and wrote: “Watching this woman work was such a f***ing thrill! Cannot wait to show you more. @florencepugh.”

However, Florence did not acknowledge the post on social media and Olivia was notably absent from Florence’s post that she shared when filming wrapped for the movie in February 2021.

What have social media users said about the rumoured feud?

The weird social media engagement between the actresses has left fans questioning whether there is a feud between the pair.

One Twitter user wrote: “Florence: sucks that ppl are reducing this film to my sex scenes with harry.

“Olivia: female pleasure !!!, clit test !!!! good sex.”

Another user tweeted: “Florence speaking out on Don’t Worry Darling and dragging Olivia Wilde in the process bc [because] she is marketing it around sex when that’s not what the movie is actually about is just chefs kiss!”

Social media users have also speculated that the “feud” is due to the director and boyfriend Harry being “all over each other on set.”

Director Olivia faced backlash online after she posted an Instagram tribute to her boyfriend for taking on a supporting role in a “women-led” film.

Journalist Roisin O’Conner tweeted at the time of the Instagram post: “It is bizarre that she thinks someone with one released acting project where he had a minor role deserves such a massive round of applause for conceding the lead to a literally Oscar-nominated actor.”

Reports have also suggested that Harry received a pay packet of $2.5m (£2m) for his role in the movie, while Florence walked away with $700,000 (£586,778), despite being the lead character.

A source denied the claim, stating: “Olivia is a huge advocate for gender equality in films and ensured that Harry and Florence were paid the same.”

Neither Florence or Olivia have addressed the feud rumours.
