Kate Garraway red-faced over baking disaster as she has to smash cake open with mallet

Kate Garraway recreated Nadiya Hussain’s royal birthday cake which she could only open with a mallet and a sharp knife after her baking disaster.

During the latest instalment of the popular ITV docuseries, the 54-year-old broadcaster welcomed the Great British Bake Off winner onto the show as she reflected how her life has changed since she won the baking show.

To mark the Queen’s 90th birthday in 2016, the professional baker made a three-tiered birthday cake for the monarch.

After Kate discovered the loving mum had agreed to come on her show, she felt it was only fair that she turned her hand to baking herself as she recreated the beautiful cake with her son William.

Before she presented her with her poor attempt at a cake, she showed a VT of her and William struggling in the kitchen as their food mixer started buzzing out of control sending cake mix all over the kitchen.

Nadiya congratulated her on her beautiful icing including the fondant roses which were made by a professional that she added on top.

As the room erupted into laughter, the pair attempted to cut open the birthday cake but needed to call in reinforcements as they struggled to cut through to the second tier.

It was at this point that Kate pulled out her wooden mallet which she used to carefully smash the knife through the cake where they finally managed to cut off a slice.

She described the cake as “a sword in the stone” bake

Nadiya described the cake as a “sword in the stone” moment after she took a bite out of the festive treat.

Although the dish appeared to be quite dense, she revealed that the cake tasted “quite nice.”
