Kate Garraway says it's a 'long onslaught' as she gives update on husband Derek Draper

GMB star Kate Garraway confessed it’s been “a long onslaught” as she gave an emotional update on her husband Derek Draper’s health.

The broadcaster appeared on ITV’s Lorraine on Friday morning (December 2) alongside co-star Ben Shephard as they promoted ITV’s new campaign, 1 Million Minutes.

But when asked by presenter Lorraine Kelly about Derek’s health – following his battle with Covid – Kate openly shared that she is thankful he is home but things have been tough.

Kate, 55, said: “I mean you know, it is a long onslaught, it’s a long onslaught and I can see he has better days, he has worse days.

“He’s thankfully at home now. It’s been a long battle to get him home again.”

“I think it’s very tough on him and it’s very tough on the people around him,” she added.

The GMB host also shared that her co-star Ben has been a huge help but she often worries that her colleagues may be sick of hearing her story.

She continued: “I can’t help but think you Lorraine or the people around me and the people at GMB and the radio as well, must be fed up to the back teeth.

“And that is the problem I think, if you’re caring in a long term situation that it doesn’t go away quickly and the fight goes on.”

Interrupting her, Ben chimed: “From Kate’s perspective she thinks that and that’s just not the case for us for ITV.

Lorraine added: ” No! Of course not.”

Ben then said: “You feel like that because it dominates your life.”

Kate also explained that although she feels she does speak about her situation openly, she receives messages from those encouraging her to speak out and share her story.

In October, mother of two Kate revealed that Derek had returned to hospital after he developed sepsis.

Talking to the Sun, she said: Derek is back in hospital after developing sepsis that again threatened his life and we are again fighting to get him home.”

“But I remain constantly inspired by those around him – not just for their expertise but for their loving care.”
