Madonna's relationship with son Rocco – custody battle to reunion as he turns 22

Queen of Pop Madonna shares her son Rocco Ritchie with her ex-husband and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels director Guy Ritchie.

Rocco is currently celebrating his 22nd birthday, but over the last two decades he hasn’t had the easiest relationship with his superstar mum.

Despite the musician rarely showing snaps of her children, the pair are in a much better place together now, after having reunited following a bitter custody battle.

The two were seen holidaying in Switzerland, showing that their previous strain is water under the bridge.

However, it was a long road to get to this point, with the problems first emerging back in 2015 following a trip to London.

Seven years ago, Rocco left his New York home to see his dad, Guy Ritchie, in London.

The young artist then refused to return home to Madonna, kicking off a tense custody battle that overshadowed Ritchie’s teenage years.

After she lost custody of him, Madonna posted a picture of herself wearing a black hoodie with the word “b*tch” emblazoned on it.

Madonna captioned the picture: “Because sometimes soccer Mom’s need to be a…”

Next she posted a picture of herself wearing a crown, and the words “Queen” written over it with red ink. The caption read: “And be treated like a…”.

Rocco was supposed to return to the United States so that they could legally make a decision about his parenting, but when he stayed in the UK it only complicated matters.

It was reported that the situation was resolved privately, with the two coming together again a year later.

Madonna and Rocco’s reunion

In 2016, Madonna and Rocco reunited at her London home.

It appears the pair have a good relationship now, as the musician has been frank about her parenting style before.

In an interview with British Vogue in 2019, Madonna said that giving her children phones ruined their relationship, explaining: “It ended my relationship with them, really. Not completely, but it became a very big part of their lives.

“They became too inundated with imagery and started to compare themselves with other people, and that’s really bad for self growth.”

However, they are close now, as the two jetted off to Switzerland earlier this year.

Sharing some snaps of the tip on Instagram, Madonna wrote: “I know a lot of fancy words, I tear them from my heart and my tongue. Then I Pray.”

Does Madonna have other children?

Madonna has five other children, with her eldest being her daughter Lourdes Maria Ciccone Leon, who she shares with her ex, personal trainer and actor Carlos Leon.

She then adopted the rest of her brood, with the first being David Banda from Malawi in 2006.

In 2009, Madonna adopted Mercy James, also from Malawi.

Finally, she adopted Stella and Esther Ciccone who are twins from Malawi, joining the family in 2017.
