Maisie Smith says she 'struggles to speak' and feels insecure following EastEnders exit

Maisie Smith, who is currently competing in Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins, has opened up about how she “struggles to speak” following her EastEnders exit.

Revealing her motivation behind joining the Channel 4 show, Maisie, 21, speaks about misconceptions and feeling insecure on Sunday night (October 2) during this week’s instalment.

“I have no idea how people see me because I just assume you just take one look at me and think, ‘oh cocky little Essex girl’, which is true, but there’s a lot more to me that people don’t know,” she explains.

Talking about her acting career and portraying Tiffany Butcher on the BBC One soap, Maisie said: “I was on Eastenders for 13 years, which was all I can remember. I sometimes think I’m more comfortable being Tiffany than I am being Maisie.

“The good thing about being an actress is that I know how to look confident. In reality I have no idea what I’m doing.”

She then went on to touch upon how growing up around a lot of adults left her feeling “slightly undermined”.

“I’ve struggled sort of speaking,” she revealed, before adding: “and I’ve had, not a stutter but I just could go blank and words wouldn’t come out and I think the more that happened, the more people would just sort of talk over me.”

The actress then went on to say how it “affected” her because she constantly felt like anytime she tried to speak “it was just useless and pointless” so she didn’t bother.

Maisie then recalled how it was a “horrible feeling” knowing that she “couldn’t find a single word” and that it was like she didn’t know any words, so couldn’t speak.

“I found it pretty hard and I just hated the person I was for a long time,” she continued.

Concluding with: “The reason I worked so hard and pushed myself was because the one thing I can’t control is the thing I’m most scared of.

“And being scared of talking … it’s horrible. I’d love to overcome these feelings of fear. I want to be this strong person that I try to be.”
