Only Fools and Horses star works in care home and lives in caravan after career U-turn

Daniel Peacock, who portrayed Mental Mickey in the beloved BBC sitcom Only Fools and Horses, has undergone a huge career U-turn and now works in a care home.

The 64-year-old TV star, who starred alongside David Jason in the much-loved programme, now works at the Hastings Court Care Home on the south coast – despite having had a glowing career in film and television.

With a career in acting spanning more than 40 years, the former Only Fools star who also starred in hit film Quadrophenia, has a newfound passion.

Daniel got into his new career path three years ago when he got his “first real job” at the care home, which came about because his dad was suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s.

His father, Trevor Peacock, who was best-known for playing Jim Trott in The Vicar of Dibley, was in a different care home – and it was after seeing his father in the home that Daniel felt inspired.

Passing away in March 2021, it was seeing what his father endured that led to the drastic career U-turn.

“Because my dad had been in a residential home, tragically, with the most awful disease Alzheimers, it was the first time I came face to face with this terrible condition and I wasn’t overly impressed with the care home.

“So when I got here at Hastings Court, it was like a very impressive hotel,” Daniel told MyLondon.

“I started to inject some entertainment and conversation between the residents and bringing them all together,” he explained.

“A lot of the residents have lived history, during and at the end of the war so you bond with people here.

“My dad died of that horrible disease but working here has made me a better person.”

His job at the care home also came shortly after he had purchased a caravan in Kent because he wanted some “solitude”, but soon found himself watching “too much television”.

Daniel’s son originally Charlie suggested that he get a job, which then led to his son finding him a job at the care home.

Although he is still working on projects in the world of TV, he has a real passion for his care home job and is committed to brightening up the lives of the residents.

In Only Fools and Horses Daniel portrayed Mickey in one episode which aired in 1985.
