'Overwhelmed' A Place In The Sun's Jonnie Irwin escapes for 'headspace' after diagnosis

A Place In The Sun presenter Jonnie Irwin has spoken out following the news that he has terminal cancer.

The 48-year-old who presents the popular Channel 4 show and BBC’s Escape To The Country, told Hello! magazine that his lung cancer has now spread to his brain.

Following the devastating announcement where he told the publication he’s not sure “how long I have left”, Jonnie took Instagram to reveal that he “escaped to the country” as he needed some time.

Posting a picture of himself standing in front of sheep and another snap walking his dog, he penned: “Overwhelmed by your kind messages, not had the chance to read them all yet but I assure you I will.

“Yesterday I needed some headspace so I escaped to the country with my brother in law and his dog. It was a tonic. Xx.”

Rushing to the comment section, fans encouraged the star and wished him all the best.

One follower wrote: “Easily the best presenter on tv. Very natural and honest. No words for you sir but godspeed and hope you enjoy time with your family.”

Another penned: “Literally tens of thousands of people sending you positive, encouraging & supportive energy keep fighting x.”

A third wrote: “Haven’t stopped thinking of you and your lovely family since we heard your news. Stay strong, enjoy every minute with your family. Yes dogs are a real tonic.”

Meanwhile a fourth heartbroken follower added: “My heart breaks. I’m very very sad to hear your news. Make the most of your time. Make memory books and videos. And spend every second you can with your beautiful family.”

Jonnie shares three boys with his wife Jessica Holmes and told Hello! magazine that he had to break the news to his wife that something was wrong when his vision became blurred while driving after filming A Place In The Sun in 2020.

He said: “Within a week of flying back from filming, I was being given six months to live,” he said.

“I had to go home and tell my wife, who was looking after our babies, that she was on her own pretty much. That was devastating.

“All I could do was apologise to her. I felt so responsible.”
