Paddy McGuinness helped rebuild infamous prison after inmates tore it up

Paddy McGuinness helped rebuild Strangeways prison after inmates tore it up in riots.

The notorious jail has housed the likes of Charles Bronson, Ian Brady and Dr Harold Shipman.

Top Gear host Paddy revealed he worked at the Manchester nick laying cell floors with his pals.

He said: “In the early 90s there’d been a riot and rooftop protest there so major work was needed.

“Myself, Franny and his brother Anton ended up laying all the floors in solitary confinement and most of the other prison cells.”

In his new book My Lifey, the Take Me Out presenter said it was hard graft working at the high-security clink.

Paddy, 48, added: “In fact, if you’re an inmate in Strangeways and you’re reading this, firstly good choice, secondly if you think you’ve got it bad you want to try bucketing in all that screed!

“On a sidenote, if you’re thinking of rioting again, spare a thought for me and my mates – we sweated our b**s off putting that in.

“The rebuilding of Strangeways was a great job because it was so big.”

Paddy also told how they once had a stripper on site when working at the prison.

He said: “This one particular morning we noticed quite a bit of commotion outside the cabin.

“There were a group of builders trying to get in. ‘Bloody hell, they must be doing a two for one on brekkies,” I said.

“When we got nearer it became apparent why: there was a stripper performing in there.

“Bit random to see at the best of times but 7.30am in the morning during a breakfast serving was a bit mad.

“It turns out one of the other builders was getting married and this had been arranged by his mates.

“So there we were, first thing in the morning, enjoying a cup of tea and a bacon butty, watching some bloke on his knees, covered in squirty cream, being whipped by a naked stripper while a load of builders whooped and cheered.”
