Rupert Grint compares JK Rowling to 'an auntie' amid transphobic backlash

Harry Potter star Rupert Grint has compared author JK Rowling to “an auntie” even though he “doesn’t agree with everything she says”.

The creator of the Harry Potter franchise has been branded a TERF (Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminist) by some after sharing her views on gender which were labeled “anti-trans”.

Rupert, who played Ron Weasley throughout the entire movie franchise, told The Times Magazine that he likens the author to “an auntie”.

He told the publication: “I liken JK Rowling to an auntie. I don’t necessarily agree with everything my auntie says, but she’s still my auntie. It’s a tricky one.”

JK Rowling has come under fire for her views and belief in biological sex after the 56 year old shared a series of tweets, which some deemed “anti-trans” and transphobic.

Harry Potter alum have disagreed with the comments made by Rowling, who wrote the books that sparked the beginning of the franchise, with Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson speaking out and standing up for the trans community, and Rupert speaking out too.

The author has denied she is transphobic, and after Percy Weasley actor Chris Rankin spoke out in December and branded her comments as “damaging”, JK Rowling clarified her views once more.

She explained how she never felt there were “only two genders” but stuck by her views on gender identity, explaining: “decisions on safeguarding, provision of services, sporting categories and other areas where women and girls currently have legal rights and protections”.

She added: “Using the words ‘sex’ and ‘gender’ interchangeably obscures the central issue of this debate.”

Earlier this month, Evanna Lynch, who played Luna Lovegood in Harry Potter, spoke out about the rumours that JK Rowling had been excluded from the 20th anniversary programme.

Evanna appeared on GB News where she explained that she believes a rift between the cast and the creator doesn’t exist.

She said: “I’ve talked to all the cast, they all have great respect for her even if they don’t agree with her beliefs. I really strongly disagree with the narrative that there’s a rift.”

Evanna continued: “She has her beliefs and she’s doing her thing. We all have strong beliefs and it’s been a very difficult conversation.

“I want there to be healing and I don’t want us to keep fighting, so I reject that narrative that there’s been a cold shoulder.”
