Sesame Street's Luis actor Emilio Delgado dies aged 81 after cancer battle

Emilio Delgado has died aged 81 after a battle with cancer.

The actor, who was famously known and loved for his role as Luis on Sesame Street for over 40 years, has sadly died after he was diagnosed with cancer in 2020.

TMZ reports that the actor died on Thursday surrounded by his family at his home in New York after previously spending time under the care of hospice.

In December 2020 the actor was was diagnosed with the blood cancer Multiple Myeloma.

His wife, Carole Delgado, said that he remained working right up until the pandemic, including landing stints in theatre, such as Quixote Nuevo, where he performed in three cities before it was shut down.

His most recent work took place in January 2022 as a voiceover actor.

Emilio was incredibly popular due to his time on the show, playing the Fix-It shop owner for 40 years – even after taking a break for a year in the 80s, he soon returned to finish his time on the series.

Emilio also featured in the 2014 documentary: I am Big Bird: The Caroll Spinney Story, alongside various other productions away from his time on Sesame Street.

The actor played for many years alongside Sonia Manzano, alongside the likes of the fictional characters Kevin Clash, Alison Bartlett, Jim Henson and Caroll Spiiney, the famous voiceover actors.

Tributes have poured in for the actor online, with one person writing: “I grew up with Emilio, a Luis like no other. What a sad thing. Farewell.”

Another wrote: “As Luis, thank you for holding down the Fix It shop in everyone’s favourite neighbourhood. And for a TV wedding a million American kids thought was real. Mr. Emilio Delgado, may your memory be a blessing.”

A third said: “Remembering Emilio Delgado, who played Luis on Sesame Street. Thank you for being a part of my childhood. Rise In Power.”

Emilio had two children, Aram Delgado and Lauren Delgado.

He married three times, to Barbara Snavely from 1963 to 1975, Linda Lee Moon from 1977 to 1984 and Carole Delgado from 1990 until his death.
