Sidney Poitier's daughter pays touching tribute to late dad in sweet Instagram snap

Sidney Poitier’s daughter has posted a powerful tribute to her late dad – after the legendary actor passed away at the age of 94.

Poitier, who made history as the first Black person and Bahamian to win an Oscar for Best Actor, died at his home in Los Angeles last week.

His daughter Sydney paid tribute to her late dad on social media – where she opened up about the ‘unbearable’ pain of losing him.

Sydney praised her father’s good nature and said that there was “no prose beautiful enough” to capture the essence of the man her dad was.

Taking to Instagram, she wrote: “There are no words for this. No real way to prepare for this. No prose beautiful enough, no speech eloquent enough to capture the essence of my dad.

“We know his accomplishments are many and that he quite literally changed the landscape for everyone who came after him. He blazed a trail through rough and hostile terrain so those coming behind him could have a bit more ease on the journey.”

She shared a sweet snap of her hugging her father – alongside her loving words.

She later said that he “changed the landscape” for those who came after him in a “hostile terrain”.

Sydney continued: “We know his accomplishments are many and that he quite literally changed the landscape for everyone who came after him. He blazed a trail through rough and hostile terrain so those coming behind him could have a bit more ease on the journey.”

His daughter spoke about the “depth of his goodness”, saying how strong and “good” he was.

Sydney wrote: “We know how graceful and wise he was. How powerful his strength of character and moral fortitude. But what I really want people to know is how GOOD he was.”

She added that her father possessed the sort of goodness that prevented him from killing “even the tiniest of bugs.”

Although, she quipped that she has become a wizard at removing spiders with a shot glass with help from her dad.

Sydney added that he had a “true reverence for all life”, and that if he hurt anyone or anything, that would hurt everyone and everything.

She explained that he would always treat anyone who crossed his path as his equal.

Opening up about her grief, Sydney talked about how she’s grieving his loss and that the world has “lost so much goodness”.

The daughter recalled the last few years of the elderly actor’s life – and how his body grew weaker and his ability to communicate lessened.

Despite this, Sidney’s goodness “grew even greater” with time.

She added: “It radiated out of him through his eyes, his smile, through the tiniest of gesture.”

After his death, Sidney’s family released a statement which explained that they were grateful that their father was “able to spend his last day surrounded by his family and friends.”
