Fashion guru Susannah Constantine has recalled the “humiliating” experience that forced her to seek help from her family after she admitted abusing alcohol.
Appearing on ITV’s Lorraine on Thursday, Susannah, 60, revealed that she hit “rock bottom” when she blacked out and wet herself on a family holiday in 2013.
Chatting to Christine Lampard about her new memoir Ready For Absolutely Nothing, Christine, 43, spoke to Susannah about her childhood.

At one point during the interview, Christine said of the book: “You mention the alcoholism and you describe yourself as aa high functioning alcoholic at one point, but there was that ‘ding’ moment wasn’t there?”
Susannah replied: “For anyone who is suffering from alcoholism will identify with this, it had been building up to the point where I didn’t have control over alcohol, it had control over me.”
Speaking about the moment she decided to get help, she continued: “We were in Cornwall and I wasn’t drinking much more than anyone else but I think when you drink consistently and daily, your body becomes like a saturated sponge and it doesn’t take much to tip you over the edge.”

She went on to say that she “blacked out, fell over, and broke two transverse processes” in her back before revealing that she wet herself.
“You can’t get anything more humiliating than that. And my children witnessed this and my husband and brother-in-law took me up to bed.
“I don’t know how I had the courage, but the next day I just got everyone round the table and I said, ‘look I need help. I’ve been lying to you, I keep saying I’m not drinking, I’m drinking far more than any of you know and I need to do something about it’.”

Susannah confessed she would drink a bottle and a half of wine every night and admitted alcohol had a “control” over her while she attempted to hide her drinking from husband Sten Bertelsen and their children Cece, 18, Esme, 21, and Joe, 23.
The TV presenter, whose mother was also an alcoholic, first revealed she has a drinking problem in 2020, and told how she has been in recovery for seven years.
She told the Daily Mail: “After years of waking up filled with shame and guilt and asking God for the four horsemen to take me away and not bring me back, I knew it was time. Drinking had ceased to be fun. I had ceased to be fun. I was no longer in control, it was controlling me.”
