WGN weatherman Jim Ramsey dies at 69 as channel mourns loss of ‘trusted’ star

A loved American weatherman has sadly passed away.

Jim Ramsey worked for America’s WGN Weather Department and sadly died at the age of 69.

The beloved former weatherman worked on WGN, a commercial breakfast station in Chicago, on weekends before retiring in 2017.

The channel announced the star’s loss and remembered his 42 years in broadcasting, with former colleagues leading tributes.

It is unclear how the star died. However, the outlet said they would reveal more in an evening news segment.

Jim was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and began his career back in 1975.

His career saw him travel across America as he worked in North Carolina, Colorada and Virginia.

Jim Ramsey worked weekend broadcasts for more than 30 years

He came to Chicago in 1980 for news and weather positions at ABC’s WLS and Channel 7.

The meteorologist then joined WGN in 1987, doing some news reporting in addition to weather forecasting.

The respected weatherman served as the outlet’s weekend weather forecaster and the primary backup for fellow meteorologist Tom Skilling.

In a lovely tribute to their former staff member, WGN tweeted a picture of the 69-year-old on social media.

Jim began his career as a news anchor in 1976

They penned: “Jim had a terrific sense of humour, he was always up for a good @WGNMorningNews bit, and was willing to mock himself, like in this late 00’s ‘Rappin Ramsey’ bit.”

The news of Jim’s sudden death rocked viewers on social media as they mourned the beloved meteorologist.

His WGN colleague, Bill Snyder, said on Twitter: “Heartbreaking news has just arrived into our newsroom. Long-time WGN colleague, Jim Ramsey has passed away at 69 yrs old.”

“I had the pleasure of working with Jim for 20 years. He was a class act, and we shared many laughs/ stories over the years. RIP Jim.”

The weatherman’s cause of death has now been revealed

Jim’s fellow network meteorologist, Mike Janssen, tweeted: “The @WGNNews family has lost a long time colleague. Jim Ramsey said he was enjoying his time out of a suit, when he visited WGN a year after retirement.”

“Jim was always a pro. I learned a lot while working beside him & enjoyed talking college football & music of the 60s with him.”

Another person mourned: “Sending my condolences to the WGN family as well as Jim Ramsay’s family and friends. Grew up watching him. RIP.”
