Ant and Dec nearly bankrupted ITV after game show led to ‘biggest win ever’

Ant and Dec have revealed that one of their shows had almost left ITV completely “bankrupt” after contestants managed to score the largest win ever in the history of the broadcaster.

The cheeky chaps from Newcastle were put in charge of a new gameshow spearheaded by ITV last year. Titled Ant and Dec’s Limitless Win, the show’s format saw a pair of contestants working together to win as much money as possible, with no possible limit in sight.

But as most couples tended to reach the £50,000 mark before cashing out, one couple held their nerve as they climbed the ladder to reach eye-watering amounts of cash. The pair eventually reached the grand total of £1million before calling time on their game, equalling the largest amount won on a game show ever in the UK.

Speaking about the incident, the Britain’s Got Talent presenters told Daily Mail that “a lot of accountants around the studio [were] looking even greyer than normal” as the pair continued to get questions right. As the show is set to return to screens in the new year, the programme’s third season sees the couple take on the tower and earn more and more money thanks to their knowledge.

When asked about how some of the contestants got on whilst taking part in the show, Ant revealed the pair nearly did bankrupt the TV station. “We’ve had more people climb up the ladder than ever before and this series sees the biggest win in the show’s history,” he replied.

So far, the highest-scoring couple to appear on the show were Will and Katherine from the show’s first series. Taking on the tower, the pair reached the £500,000 mark before cashing out, likely much to the relief of ITV bosses.

Ant and Dec, both 48, could not contain their excitement as they filmed the tense scenes. Dec went on to reveal that the high point of the show’s intensity was when his co-star Ant jumped on the desk and almost broke it, much to the dismay of ITV producers.

Dec recalled how the pair were told to rein in their reactions to the pairs’ successes. “We get so carried away – we’re just so invested in every couple that play the game. You can’t help but become emotional for them during each game,” he admitted.

Ant carried on: “In fact, I actually jumped on the desk this series,” as Dec interrupted him: ‘You got told off for that didn’t you… All will be revealed. But you did nearly break the desk.”

Ant and Dec’s Limitless Win returns to ITV1 and ITVX on January 6 at 8:30pm.
