APITS Jonnie Irwin in heartbreaking cancer update as he celebrates 50th early

A Place In The Sun star Jonnie Irwin has shared a heartbreaking and frank update amid his terminal cancer battle.

The 49-year-old presenter was given just six months to live when he was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer.

The cancer then spread to his brain in August 2020, and he publicly shared his diagnosis later that year in December.

He has since been keeping his loyal followers updated on his journey as he continues to make memories with his family, enjoying several holidays and days out together.

And now, in a new interview, Jonnie has candidly revealed that he is “weak and fragile” but insisted he is “still here”.

Jonnie revealed his cancer diagnosis last year

Speaking to The Sun, the dad-of-three spoke about how attempting to play football with his four-year-old son “broke” him.

“I tried to play football with Rex the other day and was in goal and I couldn’t get near the ball. It was so frustrating,” he said.

“I’m very sporty and suddenly it’s just like… it was as if it was the first time I’d attempted football. I felt like a granddad. And that broke me a bit.”

Jonnie also revealed he celebrated his 50th birthday early, ahead of the actual date in November.

“It was a great night,” he said about the event, which saw 170 friends and family “from all over the country and abroad” attend.

“I just wanted to do something to celebrate my birthday and had no idea how many people would actually turn up. It was incredible,” Jonnie said.

He added: “I’m weak now, fragile and my memory is terrible… but I’m still here.”

During the interview, Jessica recalled the moment Jonnie told her about his terminal diagnosis, revealing that “he couldn’t stop apologising”.

“He kept saying ‘sorry’ over and over and I just kept telling him it wasn’t his fault,” she added.

The property guru and Jessica tied the knot in September 2016.

Jonnie and Jess met through mutual friends in 2016 and were married within a year after he popped the question while in India.

Discussing his terminal diagnosis with Hello! magazine last year, Jonnie said: “I’m doing everything I can to hold that day off for as long as possible.

“I owe that to Jess and our boys,” adding: “Some people in my position have bucket lists, but I just want us to do as much as we can as a family.”
