APITS’ Jonnie Irwin says every day is ‘a gift’ in rare public appearance in cancer fight

Jonnie Irwin has said every day is “a gift” during his battle with terminal cancer.

The A Place In The Sun star announced last year that he had been diagnosed with lung cancer, saying that he didn’t know how long he had left but wanted to “make memories” with his wife Jess and their three little boys.

This week he stepped out at the TRIC Awards in London and told the Mirror it was a “good day”.

“Yesterday I peeled myself out of bed and munched painkillers but so far so good today,” said the 49-year-old.

“I take every day as a gift and as it comes.”

Escape To The Country star Jonnie was actually diagnosed with cancer in 2020.

However, he kept it quiet for a while, partly because he was concerned it would have an impact on his career and he still wanted to be able to provide for his young family.

“As soon as you say you have got cancer, people just write you off, people just think you are going to cark it,” he recently said on the OneChat podcast.

“I had to live with it as a secret. If I was to continue to be able to continue to provide for my family, I had to keep it a secret.”

The star also said he’d been dropped by A Place In the Sun because he couldn’t be insured for the work after being told he had terminal cancer.

And he admitted he felt as if he had “been thrown on a scrap heap”.

Jonnie and Jess got married in 2016 and have three sons – Rex was born in 2018 and twins Rafa and Cormac arrived in 2020.

Last year, the TV star told Hello! magazine that telling his wife that he had been give months to live was “devastating”.

“I had to go home and tell my wife, who was looking after our babies, that she was on her own pretty much.,” he said.

“All I could do was apologise to her,” he went on.

“I felt so responsible.”
