BBC Breakfast's Sally Nugent 'stages intervention' after co-star makes shock confession

BBC Breakfast ‘s Sally Nugent was ready to stage an intervention after Jon Kay made a shocking admission.

The duo fronted the morning programme on Wednesday and discussed new research that revealed hot drinks from high street chains contain six times more caffeine than others.

“I really hope you’re listening to this, Jon. You’re a coffee monster!” Sally, 51, exclaimed.

After comparing several different caffeinated drinks from chains including Starbucks and Costa, the pair spoke to specialist dietitian Nicola Ludlam-Raine who gave a deeper insight into the caffeine levels in drinks.

“Jon, I’ve got to intervene here,” Sally said before Jon agreed: “I need an intervention!”

The 53-year-old then made the jaw-dropping confession that he was currently on his fifth mug off coffee before the time hit 07:30am.

Nicola looked visibly stunned at the admission as she simple said: “So,” before letting out a nervous laugh.

Jon joked: “I can handle it, Sal. I can handle it! before querying the strength of the coffee he was drinking.

Nicola explained Jon might “only slightly” be overdoing it before suggesting he should switch between caffeinated and decaf coffee to make sure he isn’t drinking too much.

Sally later asked: “What should Jon be doing, should he still be having five coffees a morning?”

Jon put his foot down when Nicola suggested he should drop to four coffees instead of five, repeatedly saying: “No!”

Sally then noted that her co-host actually feels worse if he drinks less coffee as Jon agreed: “I think I’ve gone so far with coffee that I would probably sleep less and feel worse if I didn’t have it.”

Nicola urged the presenter to cut down gradually and ensure his last cup of coffee is more than eight hours before he goes to bed.

Jon joked: “Thank you very much indeed… for ruining my day.”

He then turned to his co-host and said: “You’re going to be smug telling me that all day aren’t you,” as Sally gave a cheeky grin to the camera.
