BBC stars who could replace Huw Edwards – BBC Breakfast legend to Channel 5 star

BBC’s Huw Edwards has been named as the presenter at the centre of the current sex photo scandal.

Currently suspended from his job at the BBC and facing an internal investigation – though no police action – Huw is “in hospital” suffering from “serious mental health issues”.

And fans are now desperate to discover just who will replace him on BBC News.

Huw was the presenter who announced the death of Queen Elizabeth II, and has been praised as a “superb broadcaster” by Alastair Campbell.

He stands accused of paying a teenager for sexually explicit photographs over a three-year period, starting when the young person was 17.

The teen is alleged to have used it to fund a cocaine habit. Three other young people have since made allegations against the broadcaster.

He also allegedly broke lockdown rules to meet a young stranger from a dating site, and is accused of sending “threatening” messages to another young person when they wanted to publicly name him.

So who will step up in his place?

Nick Servini

Nick Servini replaced Huw briefly last year

During one of Huw’s breaks from the airwaves in September last year – as he prepared for coverage of the Queen’s funeral – the host was replaced in royal coverage by another BBC star.

Nick Servini took over to cover King Charles’ first visit to Wales, with Huw “preparing for coverage on Sunday and Monday” back in 2022.

It means Nick could be one of the people ready to take over from Huw in the long run.

Nick is currently the BBC’s Political Editor for Wales, after spending six years at the company as Business Correspondent.

Having worked for the BBC since 2001, he’s a veteran star of the network, which means he could be the one to get the job.

Sophie Raworth

Deputy News at 10 host Sophie Raworth was the one to step in for Huw this week amid his suspension from the BBC – and she delivered the news about his place in the scandal.

It makes sense she would be his natural successor – despite a huge blunder she made while presenting the news.

Sophie incorrectly reported that Huw is “resigning” from the show, and was later forced to issue a correction.

She said: “Good evening. Well in the last few minutes, the presenter has been named as Huw Edwards, the man who has been accused of paying a teenager for explicit photos and he has said he is resigning.

“I’m joined now by our media editor Katie Razzall and Dominic Casciani, who is our legal correspondent.”

But she later interrupted Katie to say: “I must correct something as well because this is all breaking the last few minutes.

“He has not resigned. He has been named by his wife, he has not resigned.”

Dan Walker

Former BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker ditched the BBC for a job at Channel 5 last year – but fans have been begging for his return to the Beeb for months.

When Huw’s identity was revealed in the sex pic scandal, Dan was one of the first to release a statement, sharing his concern for the family and Huw’s wife Vicky Flind.

Dan wrote: “This is an awful situation & will come as a big shock to many.

“Huw Edwards is clearly not in a good place at the moment and this must be terrible for his family.

“I just hope that whoever needs help – on all sides of this – gets the time, space & support they need to heal.”

Plenty of fans have branded Dan a “voice of reason” amid the chaos, with some begging him to return.

But Dan says he “doesn’t miss” the BBC after leaving Football Focus and Breakfast, explaining: “I miss the people, but I don’t miss the BBC.

“I still love the BBC. I watch it and I’m still a passionate defender of what it does. And I think a media landscape without the BBC would be much bleaker. Do things need to change about the BBC? Yes. Do they need to be a bit more up-to-date in the way they do things? Probably.”

He added: “I’ve always been a viewer, and it’s nice to just be a viewer who has no attachment to it now.”

Tina Daheley

BBC Breakfast stand-in presenter Tina Daheley joined the BBC back in 2007, and works as a relief presenter on News at Six.

She’s also the voiceover presenter for Points of View, along with working on various radio shows and Crimewatch.

She proves to be a fan favourite when she takes to the Breakfast sofa, so it makes sense that fans would want to see her replace Huw.

She was even forced to host solo, as her co-star Roger Johnson made a swift exit mid-programme to host the news elsewhere last year.

Fiona Bruce

As one of the relief presenters for BBC News at 10, Antiques Roadshow star Fiona Bruce could be next in line to take Huw’s place.

She’s been a part of the BBC since 1989, when she started work as a researcher for Panorama, and has gone on to present shows including Question Time.

She’s even appeared in various skits alongside Jeremy Clarkson before his Top Gear axe.

Another name on the tip of everyone’s tongue is Mastermind host Clive Myrie, who is another relief presenter for News At 10.

Taking to Twitter, one fan speculated: “I think Huw’s job on the 10 (plus all the other stuff like elections and state occasions) will now go to Clive Myrie

“Obviously the current team (Fiona Bruce, Rita, Jane Hill) will continue and I predict we’ll see more of Tina.”

Someone else agreed: “Clive Myrie stepping in?”

Clive joined the BBC in 1987 as a local radio reporter and has gone on to present the news in various iterations.
