Carol Vorderman and Piers Morgan lead tributes to ‘comedy genius’ Barry Humphries

Devastated fans and celebrities have rushed to pay tribute to Barry Humphries after the telly legend sadly died aged 89.

The much-loved comedian, best known for his characters of Dame Edna and Les Patterson, passed away in Sydney at the St Vincent’s Hospital following his recent health battle that left him in “agony.”

And tributes to Barry have since begun to pour in from several of his fellow showbiz pals.

Little Britain star Matt Lucas said: “I wonder if all geniuses are as lovely as Barry Humphries.” The former Great British Bake Off host added: “Thank you for delighting and inspiring us. Quite simply, you were the greatest.”

Piers Morgan wrote: “RIP Barry Humphries, 89. One of the funniest people I’ve ever met. A wondrously intelligent, entertaining, daring, provocative, mischievous comedy genius. As hilarious in private as he was as the iconic Dame Edna. What a life, what a character. Thanks for all the laughs, Barry.”

Ricky Gervais posted on Twitter too, writing: “Farewell, Barry Humphries, you Comedy genius.”

Carol Vorderman said: “You will be mourned Barry Humphries I only met you a few times but that look in your eyes full of bright intelligence and mischief, knowing trouble was ahead and looking forward to every special second of it: I’ll never forget it. Thank you Sir. A genius.”

Fellow Aussie Jason Donovan said: “Australia has lost one of its greatest! Funny, literate and fiercely intelligent Barry Humphries was quite simply an entertaining genius. The characters he created brought laughter to millions … My thoughts are with family on this sad day!”

X Factor alum Rylan also tweeted and gushed: “Seeing all the Barry Humphries clips is just so warming. What a genuine genius. Such a sad loss.”

Barry’s death came after his recent health battle that left him in “agony” and going in and out of hospital following complications from a hip replacement.

The popular comedian took his final breaths in a Sydney hospital in the company of his family, following complications from hip replacement surgery.

His death was confirmed shortly after the surgery.
