Coronation Street Tim star addresses death fears as he talks grim filming conditions

Coronation Street star Joe Duttine has shared his concerns for his character Tim Metcalfe possibly being dramatically killed off.

Over the past few weeks, ITV fans have been gripped to the long-running soap desperately holding out for cobbles killer Stephen Reid to receive the cold hand of justice.

Since he joined the show in 2021, his character has taken the lives of Teddy and Leo Thompkins and his business associate Rufus – but he could have another death on his hands this week.

Monday’s episode (October 9) sees Tim investigate Stephen’s secrets and find Teddy Thompkins’ body hidden away in a local canal.

A horrified Tim soon springs into action and hopes to expose Stephen as a killer, but the cold-hearted Canadian goes on the attack and knocks him unconscious. It doesn’t take long before Tim is fighting for his life as Stephen locks him in the boot of his car and douses the vehicle with petrol.

Speaking to Daily Star and other press, Joe teased: “When Tim goes down to the canal, walks along the towpath and sees a hand coming out of the roof box, that’s when the reality hits him. He spots the decomposed body in the canal and realises that Stephen is capable of that.

“At first, Tim is just thinking in the moment. I don’t think he really thinks a bout the danger that he’s in. I don’t think he’s scared at first, but suddenly it kicks in when he’s confronted with a killer.”

When he was asked whether viewers should be worried about a possible death for Tim, Joe replied: “I think so, yeah. I like the fact that we don’t know what’s going on with Tim after Monday’s episode and we focus on the story with the Platts instead. I like the fact that we don’t know where he is. You almost forget about him. So I think the audience should be very worried for Tim.”

In the build-up to Stephen’s dramatic demise, the pair were lucky enough to film the tense scenes out on location – but it wasn’t quite as glamourous as it seemed.

The actor went on: “I loved doing all that stuff. It was great. It’s great to do something different as well – it’s great to get out of the building. During the COVID lockdowns, we were using the building a lot.

“When you can work in real locations, it adds a certain reality to it. It’s just nice to be involved. Getting out of the taxi office and getting away from Steve McDonald from time to time is a bit of a bonus, isn’t it?

“We had a stunt double, but the only time I used the double was for when Tim fell on the floor. I said, ‘If we can, I want to do it!’” It was at this point that the soap star opened up about the grim filming conditions while shooting in an abandoned warehouse.

Joe couldn’t help but gush over his impressive stunt double, adding: “This guy was incredible, I mean he literally just threw himself onto concrete this guy. I had a really lovely crash mat but, you know, we were at the street where there were syringes and all sorts of horrible things.

“There were a couple of times when I did actually have to have my face on this tarmac. They [the crew] said, ‘Yeah, we’ve cleaned it’ and I said, ‘Yeah right. How much have you cleaned it? You’ve swept over it once maybe’ and I’m sitting there with all these horrible things hanging out of my hair.”

Fans will have to stay tuned to see what will happen to Tim and whether or not he will be able to escape Stephen’s murderous grasp.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8pm on ITV1 or catch up on ITVX.
