Corrie star Simon Gregson’s dramatic life – horror injuries to ‘haunted’ home

Simon Gregson is renowned for portraying one of the nation’s most beloved Coronation Street characters, Steve McDonald.

And it appears the actor has had just as many difficult moments as his on-screen counterpart.

On a November 29 edition of the ITV show, the man who previously made a living pulling pints in The Rovers returned to the cobbles after a dramatic trip to Spain, in which he broke his leg.

He received sympathy from his pals in the pub, with the exception of his wife Tracy, as he revealed that he had sustained the injury while chasing after a mugger.

He picked up the same break in real life, albeit in very different circumstances to poor Steve.

He said at the time: “I’ve broken my leg.

“I literally just went over and rolled my ankle, outside the back of the house. It was done in six places.”

Gregson made an appearance on Good Morning Britain last month to update the fans on his injury, explaining that he had a long way to go before he was back to full health.

“It hurts all the time. It’s driving me mad,” he said.

“I think it’s just a case of just having to wait quite a while until it’s fully better.”

Host Kate Garraway then asked: “So you’re out of plaster, you can move about a little bit, you’re obviously sitting down, but what a problem for you.”

To which Gregson responded: “I know, yeah, it’s been driving me mad.

“I can’t do the things I usually do, but you know, as I said, maybe in a few more months, I’ll be back to A1 condition.”

During his 28 years on the show, the fictional character has engaged in his fair share of shenanigans. But nowadays, he stays away from the drama, offering a bit of comic relief to his adoring fans.

Most iconically, Corrie enthusiasts know him for his unlucky romantic history, featuring five marriages to the likes of Michelle Connor and the ever-dramatic, Tracy Barlow.

But in reality, Gregson’s home life is very different.

The actor was scouted for the role at Kingsway School in Stockport, at just 15, appearing in his first episode in 1989.

And in news that will delight readers, away from Weatherfield, in 2010, he married Hollyoaks actress Emma Gleave. The couple have three boys together – Alfie, Henry, and Teddy.

Sadly, however, they failed to secure their dream home, with Gregson revealing that he was living with an unwanted guest during an episode of ‘Celebrity Help! My House Is Haunted’.

He claimed that a shadowy woman was roaming his halls, which unsurprisingly rendered him terrified.

In addition to his acting talents, Gregson writes poetry, keeping a notebook at the bottom of his bed so he can jot down whatever rhyme pops into his head.

Talking to the Sunday Mirror, his wife said: “He’s always writing, he keeps books at the end of the bed so when he can’t sleep, he’ll have a dream or he’ll have a thought and will write it down.”

Furthermore, the actor struggles with crippling anxiety disorder. On one occasion, he passed out during a holiday due to a panic attack.

He attempted to defeat his problems during a stint on ‘I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, which made his partner very happy.

She added: “Ten years ago, there would have been absolutely no way he would have done I’m A Celeb.

So to watch him go in and take on the unknown, which he was really nervous about, to actually embrace it and to look so relaxed while he is doing it, we are dead proud of him.

I was very emotional watching.”

Now Gregson has made it his mission to help people suffering from miscarriages. He’s opened up about how his wife has suffered 11 of them, including his daughter, Georgia.

He explained: “When Emma lost Georgia, she was 21 weeks, and what had happened was Emma’s tubes were twisted, but Georgia stayed alive long enough to untwist the tubes, which they said it was amazing how she survived all that and then went.

“But that paved the way for Alfie, you see, so we always think of her as like an angel.”
