Entertainment correspondent Peter Ford gave Australia’s Channel Seven’s Sunrise programme an update on Barry’s condition.

Tweeting a clip from the show, he said: “Statement to media due to be released shortly. At this moment Barry is in a serious condition but being kept comfortable. He’s surrounded by family.”

He later added: “Barry won’t give up easily. Barry has something marked on his calendar and that is to say he’ll be back on stage before the end of the year.

“He’s been travelling around the UK last year doing a one man show, largely sitting in a chair and talking about the great characters he’s created through the years.

The report also mentioned that he believes “it’s not over until it’s over” but also confirmed that he was told “Barry’s health has worsened in the last week”.

When the correspondent was asked how long he thinks Barry would be hospitalised for, he said things were currently “up in the air” while stating that there are very serious concerns over his health at the moment.

Despite the reports Barry’s wife Lizzie Spender told Sunday Morning Herald: “He’s fine.”

Meanwhile another close friend said: “He’s with doctors at the moment.”

Journalist Andrew Neil revealed he had visited Barry in hospital last week.

He then took to Twitter over the weekend and wrote: “Visited legendary Barry Humphries in Sydney hospital during my Oz trip.

“As always he had me in stitches even though he’s been undergoing various treatments for months in hospital. I am in awe of his courage. And, of course, his humour, which is irrepressible, even in adversity.”

Last month, Barry previously revealed that he was in “agony” after breaking his hip from falling in his home.
