Ellen Degeneres had three-word response to name of Meghan Markle’s rescue dog

Ellen Degeneres had a snappy three-word response when Meghan Markle revealed the name of her rescue pooch.

The US chat show host isn’t known for holding back her strong opinions – and the same was true when she learnt that the Duchess of Sussex was adopting a pup.

Before Ellen grabbed headlines by inviting Meghan onto her show for a series of bizarre sketches, the pair first met at an animal rescue centre – and Ellen had no idea who the former Suits actress was at the time.

Way before she met Prince Harry, Meghan recalled on her old blog The Tig that Ellen encouraged her to take a pup home – revealing the short response she had to her new puppy’s name.

Referring to two of her Hollywood pals, Meghan wrote at the time: “When Ellen Degeneres tells you to do something, you do it. Much like if Oprah suggested a life choice for you. You’d get on that as soon as humanly possible.

“As such, this is the story of how a sweet little rescue pup, came to be my Bogart. It was two years ago in LA, and as I sat there with this ten week old frisky puppy on my lap, Ellen Degeneres came in and said three simple words to me that changed my life.”

Those three words were “take him home”.

Meghan was at SPOT Rescue centre in West Hollywood at the time – a family-run business rescuing pups and offering in-house grooming and boarding kennels.

Meghan said: “I had been on the search for a dog, my first dog ever, to keep me company while I filmed far away in Toronto, and to become my sidekick for a very long time.

“My home of Los Angeles County puts down more dogs per capita than any other city in the US, so rescuing was a no-brainer. And I didn’t need to go to an organisation that specialised in specific breeds for adoption because I wasn’t in the market for a pure bred dog. My rationale: I’m a mutt, and I turned out just fine.”

Ellen turned up and asked Meghan if the “five pound ball of ombre fur” was her pet, as Meghan explained via her blog: “I’m equal parts in shock at seeing Ellen Degeneres for the first time and hoping this puppy doesn’t pee on me during this I’m-meeting-Ellen-Degeneres-for-the-first-time time.

“Ellen asks, ‘Did you name him?’ ‘Bogart’, I said, ‘I think I would call him Bogart.’”

Meghan added: “And then she looked at me with such assurance and simply said, ‘Take him home.’ And I did. I didn’t know it then, but I know it now. This animal changed my life.”

Sadly, Meghan was reportedly forced to leave Bogart behind when she moved to London to be with Prince Harry – with the dog heading to live with “friends” of the couple.

She and Harry have since added a black Labrador, Pula, to their growing family.
