Emma Stone couldn’t ‘shy away’ from sex in new film as director talks ‘horny legend’

‘Horny legend’ Emma Stone had to be ‘totally free’ while filming her new movie Poor Things, which features “strong and pervasive sexual content and graphic nudity”. Director Yorgos Lanthimos has described just how La La Land actress Emma fully embraced the character of Bella Baxter in the upcoming release.

Based on the 1992 novel of the same name, Poor Things follows Bella as she is brought back to life by a scientist after committing suicide. Shortly after being revived, she falls for a “debauched lawyer” and heads on a voyage of “self-discovery and sexual liberation”.

The R-rated flick was promoted at the New York Film Festival last week, with director Yorgos admitting the sex scenes were a “very important part of her journey.”

He went on: “We felt that we shouldn’t shy away from it. It would feel very disingenuous to tell this story about this character who is so free and so open, and then be [a] prude about the sexual aspect of it.

“It was clear from the beginning, but also from the novel, from the script, from my discussions with Emma, as well, and how we came up with those scenes. She had to be free; there should be no judgment.”

On Bella, the director said: “The same way she learns about language and human suffering and love and science and politics, the same way she should be equally free about sex and anything else.”

He said Emma was “just incredible” in the role, gushing: “The vulnerability of it, the sensitivity and the humour of it – it’s just so difficult to do. I just don’t know how she did it.”

The film features plenty of scenes with Emma as Bella in the buff as her character becomes a sex worker in Paris. Branded a “horny legend”, the character “stuffs a cucumber inside what she calls her ‘hairy business’” according to Geoffrey Macnab of The Independent.

That’s when “a new world of adventure and tragedy opens up for her”. Some scenes were so raunchy that viewers at the film’s premiere at Venice Film Festival headed for the doors – while journalists were prepped ahead of time on what to expect.

Variety said of the film: “She reveals herself to be one of cinema’s horniest legends, f***ing her way across the European seaboard. Stone’s performance matches that fearlessness; she goes for broke here, cumming loudly, her body and face hitting every note of the human sexual experience — thrill, disappointment, disgust, horror, intrigue.”
