Emmerdale fans ‘work out’ real reason David Metcalfe star has quit after 17 years

Emmerdale fans reckon they have figured out the real reason soap alum Matthew Wolfenden is quitting the ITV soap.

It was reported the last week that the TV favourite, who plays David Metcalfe, is leaving the Yorkshire set after 17 years.

And now, fans of the long-running soap have claimed they have rumbled the exact reason Matthew, 43, is saying goodbye to the famous village.

Over on X, formerly known as Twitter, many viewers reckon it’s down to the storylines his character has had.

One mused: “I’m not surprised, he’s barely in it and hasn’t had a good storyline in months.”

A second chimed in and added: “No surprise there! He’s had nothing to do for well over a year and it’s clear they have no idea what to do with him.”

Echoing their thoughts, a third quipped: “I won’t miss him but that’s not the actor’s fault. The producer has given him nothing good to do in months.”

Someone else said: “It’s a shame. Great actor, but terrible storylines,” while another penned: “His character is done, he’s only good for voiced opinions and shop deliveries, so long!”

Matthew has apparently told friends that he’s “bored” with the plotlines he’s been having in recent months.

A TV source told The Sun that he wants to “see what else is out there” after “not getting any gritty storylines”.

They added: “He’s excited about the opportunities available. He’s only just announced he is leaving so scriptwriters are working out his on-screen exit. It’s possible David could be killed off.”

He has faced some challenging storylines in his history on the soap, but he’s ready for his last one as he prepares to exit.

Two years ago Matthew took some time away from the soap following an inquiry from ITV following allegations of a comment to a mixed-raced actress and claims her accent was mimicked.

Matthew and his co-star Isabel, who plays Victoria Sugden, said the alleged remark and mimic was “misheard” and no formal action was taken against the duo.

At the time of the investigation, they had been filming a plot which saw Victoria go over a waterfall, allowing them both to have some time off-screen while the probe was conducted.

In another gruelling storyline, David was involved for a time with murder Meena Jutla, making Victoria one of her prime targets, though Victoria managed to make it out alive.

Away from the soap, Matthew tied the knot with his co-star Charley Webb, who played Debbie Dingle in 2018, having previously dated in 2007 and welcoming a child together.

They split briefly, but upon rekindling their romance welcomed a further two children.

Charley quit the show last year and has since focused on her family while taking part in other gigs, including the UK tour of James Graham’s Quiz.
