Emmerdale stars' jobs after soap – delivery driver, passion with co-star and estate agent

Emmerdale viewers have seen lots of characters come and go – but have you ever wondered what some of the actors did next after their soap exits?

While some have gone on to other huge TV and soap roles, others have hit the heights of Hollywood stardom.

Others however have turned their backs on acting completely, with some also taking on day jobs in supermarkets and estate agents around their acting careers.

Adam Thomas played Adam Barton in Emmerdale from 2011 to 2018, after following in the footsteps of his Coronation Street star brother Ryan.

However after leaving the soap in 2018, the actor made a career U-turn after announcing that he had taken up work as an estate agent.

Speaking about the move on Instagram, Adam explained that he had not turned his back on acting, but that he had to work to support his family.

“I haven’t, nor will I ever, turn my back on acting but I have a family to support and will carry on doing so…whether it be acting or otherwise,” he wrote.

One year later, Adam made another move as he launched his own bar called The Spinn in Gatley, alongside his friend Scott Graham.

He has since bought a second bar in Stockport and shared the exciting news with followers on Instagram, as he said: “We finally opened our doors in little under bank in Stockport!”

That’s not all, as Adam has also launched a number of food outlets including a summer pop up called Box on the Docks and restaurant, Oh My Glaze.

Even Adam’s brother Ryan, who played Jason Grimshaw in Coronation Street until 2016, has helped his brother out by working as a delivery driver for The Spinn.

Ryan shared a video on social media of himself outside the bar and restaurant, as he joked with fans that he “might be coming to a home near them.”

‘I’m just waiting outside The Spinn to pick up my next delivery. Make the call, you know you want to. I might be coming to a home near you,” he said.

Dominic Brunt

Dominic, who plays Paddy Kirk, is part of an unusual venture away from the soap, but has got his co-star involved.

He and Mark Charnock, who plays Marlon Dingle, run an annual zombie film festival in Leeds.

The venture was first launched in 2008 and Paddy directed his fifth film, Wolf Manor last year.

Speaking about his job away from the soap, Dominic said on Loose Women: “My loyalties lie with Emmerdale, they really do.

“It takes about two to four years to get the funding together and sometimes films collapse and sometimes they get up and go forward but it can be a very tricky situation, but I don’t want to ever do one of them by halves, so I only do them every few years.

“I’m happy with Emmerdale and I really love it.”

Bill Ward

Bill Ward starred as James Barton in Emmerdale between 2013 to 2017, as well as playing Charlie Stubbs in Coronation Street between 2003 to 2007.

Although he has continued to act since leaving both soaps, including stints in After Life, Casualty and most recently ITV’s Vera, the star has also had a number of jobs away from our TV screens.

During the Coronavirus pandemic, Bill was supposed to be touring the country with The Glee Club, but when events were postponed he took up a job as a Tesco delivery driver.

“Towards the end of May it started to become clear that the pandemic wasn’t going away. And if anything it was going to get worse,” Bill told Bristol Live.

“That’s when you look at the rest of the year ahead and think, ‘Okay, I need to make a living this year; how are we going to do that as a family?’

He has since returned to acting, but also indulges in another of his passions – photography.

The talented photographer is self-taught, but has since had his work exhibited at venues such as The Contemporary Six Gallery in Manchester, Webbs Fine Art Gallery in London and The Tabernacle in Notting Hill.

That’s not all, as he has also won numerous awards for his work, including the inaugural Adobe Prize at the 2015 UK Landscape Photographer of the Year Awards.

Most recently he also won Best Seascape at the 2020 Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year Awards.

Marc Silcock

Marc Silcock played Jackson Walsh in Emmerdale between 2006 to 2011, with the character becoming involved in a number of huge storylines in the soap.

Following the character’s death in 2011, Marc continued to act in programmes such as Crime Stories, Privates, Casualty and Doctors.

He also played Eli in Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks between 2008 to 2009, while appearing on Emmerdale.

However, Birmingham Mail reported that Marc has since retired from acting and made a career u-turn similar to co-star Adam Thomas.

Marc joined Kamani Property group in 2017 and now works as an estate agent.

The actor has not turned away from soaps forever though, telling The Sun: “I honestly couldn’t rule out going back to soap in the future. But it would have to work for me. I wouldn’t do it for the sake of it.”
