Hollyoaks legend speaks out as Diane declared dead after 'awful' Eric crossbow attack

Hollyoaks star Alex Fletcher has said fans will be left with a “very heavy heart” as Diane Hutchinson is declared dead in upcoming scenes.

The Channel 4 soap has been exploring radicalised misogyny over the past few months and Eric Foster (Angus Castle-Doughty) has issued several sinister threats to all the women in the village.

He arms himself with a crossbow and sparks a siege situation at The Dog during his sister Verity Hutchinson’s wake this week.

The soap star explained: “The audience are going to be left with a really heavy heart and I think they’ll feel really anxious watching it.

“It made me really sad and I cried my eyes out.”

“Hollyoaks never shy away from tackling issue led storylines. and there’s a huge responsibly around it for everyone.

“You don’t want to sensationalise but you want to tell a good story.”

Speaking about filming the dramatic scenes, Alex continued: “It nearly sent me over the edge.

“When I had the meeting with all the chief execs and producers it was a bit of a shock when they told me about the storyline.

“I knew it was going to be brilliant and I know nobody else has really done this storyline in any other soap so I know it was a big one.

Alex went on to share that she thinks Diane has been on Eric’s hit list for a long time.

She revealed: “He doesn’t want to be told women and I don’t think he’s warmed to Diane that much because she does tell him how it is.

“I think she was always on his radar.”

Hollyoaks airs weekdays on Channel 4 at 6.30pm followed by first-look episodes on E4 at 7pm
