Inside Michael McIntyre's 'rocky' marriage with Holby City star's sister

Comedian Michael McIntyre has made his name with funny stories about everyday life, including parenting and his marriage.

The London comic has been married to aromatherapist wife Kitty Ward since 2003, and the couple share two sons Lucas and Oscar.

However it hasn’t always been smooth sailing for their marriage, as Michael has revealed they faced some “rocky” times including Michael’s family trying to split the couple up in the early days.

Kitty, who is the daughter of the late film star Simon Ward and sister of Young Sherlock Holmes actress and Holby City star Sophie Ward, also wasn’t totally taken with Michael when they first met.

In fact, Michael revealed he had to persuade Kitty to give him a chance.

He wrote in his 2010 book Life and Laughing: “She was the girl I had been looking for. In the romantic comedy that was my life, this would have made a good ending.

“We would fall happily ever after. Within moments of seeing her and chatting to her I was totally up for that ending. Unfortunately, she wasn’t.”

However the comedian managed to woo Kitty, with the pair later marrying in 2003.

When the pair had coupled up, it wasn’t the news that everyone wanted to hear.

In fact, Michael’s family were less than pleased as the comic revealed his grandmother didn’t take to Kitty at all.

On Desert Island Discs, Michael explained: “Unfortunately my grandma didn’t really like it when I got a girlfriend. She was trying to break us up which was funny for a while but then it became quite vicious, an untenable situation.”

The couple usually keep details of their marriage and private life firmly under wraps, but Michael does talk about his parenting as part of his hilarious comedy skits.

Michael and Kitty have two children, sons Lucas and Oscar, which funnyman Michael joked about: “You never love your children more than when they’re unconscious, but still breathing.”
