ITV and BBC at war as stars ‘banned’ from Strictly unless strict rule is met

ITV and the BBC are reportedly locked in a broadcasting war and don’t want their stars to appear on each-other’s reality shows.

It’s been alleged that both ITV and the BBC have put rules on place to stop their stars from “jumping ship” and signing up to a show on the other broadcaster.

ITV has allegedly put an effective ban on celebs from signing up to the BBC’s it dancing show Strictly Come Dancing unless their situation meets “strict criteria”.

The Sun claim they’ve seen paperwork which outlines the channel’s stance on stars appearing on Strictly.

According to the outlet, it reads: “All television appearances will also be subject to consideration of ITV’s commercial interests, especially whether the show might compete against ITV’s programmes, impact on ITV’s ratings and therefore damage ITV’s commercial interests.

“As a general rule, we will support shows on ITV and productions from ITV Studios.

“For example, we’d say no to an artiste appearing on Strictly but are likely to support an artiste appearing on I’m A Celebrity.”

It’s claimed that the BBC has a similar rule in place limiting which of their talent can enter the jungle for ITV’s I’m A Celeb.

Former BBC Breakfast star Louise Minchin only signed up to I’m A Celeb in 2021 after leaving the BBC – and it’s alleged she could only do so after leaving the broadcaster.

A source told The Sun: “Loyalty in TV doesn’t exist in quite the same way it used to and the golden handcuff contracts of old are few and far between.

“Reality shows are really the last battleground and channels obviously want to try to retain their viewers’ favourites for their own programme.

They added that this was seen last week with ITV reportedly singing up This Morning’s Josie Gibson for I’m A Celeb with a six-figure deal.

It’s understood that ITV beat the BBC to get Josie to take on the jungle rather than take to the BBC’s Strictly dancefloor.
