Pop Idol’s Hayley Evetts now – unrecognisable, soap stint and Eurovision heartache

Hayley Evetts first came into the public eye in 2001 when she auditioned for Popstars.

After failing to make either of the groups, she returned later in the year and auditioned for the first series of hit ITV show Pop Idol.

The singer, 46, was pit up against several huge names and went on to finish in fifth place behind Zoe Birkett, Darius Campbell, Gareth Gates and champion Will Young.

After starring on the singing show, Hayley landed herself several TV appearances as both a presenter and an actress – but she couldn’t stay away from singing for long.

22 years after soaring to fame, Daily Star has looked at what the singer is up to now.

Hayley dipped her toe into the acting pool when she landed the small role of Eve on Coronation Street.

The star also hosted Sky TV’s Cruel Holiday and Popstars: The Rivals Extra alongside Dane Bowers in 2002.

It seems the actress has chosen a life away from the spotlight in recent years, but still keeps her fans updated via her Instagram.

The star’s bio reads: “Pop Idol, TV presenter and lover of all things Gin…”

Hayley has also ditched the red hair she had on X Factor and has tried out several different styles, including bombshell blonde locks.

A decade after her big break, Hayley returned to her roots and released her single Don’t Waste My Time in 2011.

One year later, the singer took to the stage once again as she auditioned for Pop Idol’s successor, X Factor.

Despite sailing through her first audition, Hayley was sent packing at bootcamp, narrowly missing out on the chance to perform at judges houses.

Eurovision heartache

It seemed like Hayley’s big comeback was destined to happen when she planned to compete in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2016.

The Birmingham performer was hoping to make a surprise return to the spotlight, however this time for Romania.

Hayley made it through to the last 12 acts as Romania searched for their entry to sing Brand New Day, however, she was forced to pull out after suffering an injury to her knee.

Martyn Baylay, the song’s co-writer, said: “I am very sad to regretfully let you know that, due to a serious knee injury, Hayley Evetts has been advised not to perform or make any strenuous efforts for six weeks.

“Due to the fact that the rules do not allow us to change the singer, we have no option but to withdraw the song Brand New Day from Romania’s semi-final.”
