Prince William teary-eyed as Helen Mirren makes lovely tribute to late Queen at BAFTAs

Prince William, 40, got emotional at this year’s BAFTAs after a tribute was made about his late grandmother, the Queen.

His wife, Kate Middleton, 41, joined the future King as they ascended down the red carpet for the star-studded event in London on Sunday night (19th Feb).

The prominent Royal figure reportedly became teary-eyed during the show’s ceremony following a speech by Hollywood actress Dame Helen Mirren.

In her speech, Helen, who portrayed her Majesty in the 2006 movie The Queen, made a sentimental tribute to the late monarch, who died September 9, 2022, at 96.

As a special video was played on screen, Dame Helen said: “Cinema at its best does what Her Majesty did effortlessly – bring us together and unite us through a story. Your Majesty, you were our nation’s leading star.”

William appeared to have tears in his eyes during the moment as he sat beside Kate as they attended the ceremony as guests of honour.

The Queen had a close association with the Academy, which spanned 50 years and saw her donate and support initiatives and attend many events over the years.

William and Kate took to the BAFTAs red carpet, with Kate dazzling the crowd in a white one-shouldered gown and black velvet gloves that matched William’s pre-worn black velvet suit.

Their attendance marked the first time she and William had made an appearance at the event in three years.

Kate matched her dress with a pair of dangling earrings, which she showed off by slicking her brunette locks back behind her ears.

Despite the royal duo looking amazing as they took to the prestigious event, fans couldn’t help but notice an awkward red carpet-moment.

Kate can be seen trying to hold onto William’s hand in a sweet gesture as they walk away from photographers and into the venue.

However as she goes to interlace her fingers with his, William lifts his hand up to wave at fans nearby, completely ignoring her reach.

One on-looker who managed to get a video of the moment tweeted it, writing: “Oof. Don’t give up, girl.”
