Samuel L Jackson insists on special clause in every movie contract before he signs

Samuel L. Jackson has a clause inserted into all of his movie contracts to make sure he can have a decent work-life balance.

The actor was 40 years old by the time he got his first major role in the 1989 film Do the Right Thing but by 45 he was a big star after appearing in the 1994 cult classic Pulp Fiction.

Now he’s one of the biggest faces in Hollywood and holds the record for being the highest-grossing actor of all time — with a whopping 208 acting credits.

The 74-year-old is currently starring in the Marvel series Secret Invasion and has been working on a long list of other projects, including starring alongside Uma Thurman in the upcoming thriller The Kill Room as well as joining Dua Lipa and Henry Cavill as part of the cast for Argylle, due to be released next year.

But while the actor certainly leads a busy work life, he always makes sure he gets some downtime by only signing contracts with a clause that allows him to have some time for one of his favourite hobbies — golf.

He insists he must be able to play a minimum of two days a week and revealed production teams often have to move him to a golf course during production to fulfil the clause.

Explaining how it works during an interview with CNN back in 2013 he said: “Generally, they either move me onto a golf course so I can play or join a club so I can play, and they have to let me play at least twice a week.”

The Hateful Eight star revealed he was introduced to the sport by some friends in Los Angeles but he initially refused to play with them until they finally “tricked” him into a game.

“They tricked me one day and told me we were going somewhere else and we ended up at a golf course,” he recalled.

His competitive side got the better of him so he decided to take up the sport and quickly became a skilled player.

He said: “I didn’t like the fact that they could do something that I couldn’t and I started playing. Now they don’t play with me.”

Explaining why he loves the sport so much, he added: “I like golf because it’s a perfect game for an only child like me.

“Team sports people tend to blame you or somebody else, it’s always somebody else’s fault that you didn’t do this or you didn’t do that. But with this game, you get responsibility for everything you do bad, and you get all the credit for everything you do well.”

While his LA friends no longer play with him, the Hollywood legend doesn’t struggle to find people to join him on the course.

He’s gone up against five-time Masters winner Tiger Woods, who he met for a round at St Andrews in Scotland, and has even played games against former presidents Donald Trump and Bill Clinton.

His favourite course is the Augusta National Club

The well-travelled actor has played on courses all over the world but he revealed his favourite is the Augusta National Golf Club, which hosts the Masters.

It’s known as one of the most exclusive golf clubs with members including some of the wealthiest and most powerful people in the world.

Anyone who wants to play at the club must be accompanied by a member and autographs are strictly forbidden.

But Samuel managed to get some rounds in at the elite club after he was gifted them by the producers of his 2006 film Freedomland.

“My wrap gift on that film was three rounds of golf at Augusta,” he said.
