Shaun Ryder fears being assassinated by Vladimir Putin after blasting leader in song

Shaun Ryder is paranoid about being poisoned by Vladimir Putin.

The Happy Mondays frontman wrote lyrics mocking the Russian President in tunes for his new group, Mantra Of The Cosmos.

But Shaun, 60, said that even though he started off wanting to “put the boot into Putin” with his new releases, he toned down the words after he started to get scared they could make him a target for assassination.

He added: “It started off worst than that, but we thought, ‘Let’s give this band a chance before we all get poisoned.’”

Shaun’s fears come after the 2018 Salisbury Novichok poisoning of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia – and amid warnings Putin is on the verge of launching a nuclear attack.

He added that instead of going down the political route, he started doing fun rhymes such as matching “laughing gas” with “working class”.

Former heroin addict Shaun said about his chaotic songwriting technique: “We just press record and I get to throw a s**tload of ideas down.”

He told Uncut magazine lyrical themes have become “whatever floats me boat at the time”.

Shaun’s new group Mantra Of The Cosmos also consists of Zak Starkey, 57, from The Who and Oasis bassist Andy Bell, 52, and Happy Mondays’ dancer Bez, 59.

Bez has said the group is inspired by sci-fi and recently said he thinks humans are aliens. He added: “Everyone has their own view on the existence of aliens.

“Myself, personally, I think it may be us lot time travelling. That’s my thought on it.“I think we’re time travelling through the universe and time – yeah, I think we’re the aliens. I think we are time travellers and descendants of time travellers – that’s my own personal opinion.”

He added about his fear of an upcoming invasion by “other aliens” of Earth: “Apparently there’s going to be a massive alien invasion – that’s coming next.

“I take everything with a pinch of salt, and what I’ve learnt about our governments is that they’re not very truthful and they never tell you the truth.

“I never actually believe a single word they tell me, which is unfortunate. They’ve been caught out lying that many times it’s unbelievable.”
