Smash Mouth frontman Steve Harwell enters hospice care and given ‘a week to live’

Steve Harwell, the frontman of the rock band Smash Mouth famous for its Shrek soundtrack, is said to be in critical condition due to ongoing health problems and has been admitted to hospice care as a result.

Multiple reports have confirmed that the musician, famous for chart-toppers like All Star and Walkin’ on the Sun, is under the care of his fiancée, as Steve is entering the final phase of his life.

The 56-year-old singer has been reportedly grappling with alcohol dependency for much of his life.

Sadly, he has now progressed to the terminal stage of liver failure, despite having received medical treatment in a hospital until recently.

Steve’s manager told TMZ: “At this point, we’re told SH is in hospice at home … where his friends and loved ones have gathered over the past three days.”

According to the music artist’s manager, it is believed that he has approximately a week left to live.

Another representative of Steve has told CBS News: “My only additional comment is that we would hope that people would respect Steve and his family’s privacy during this difficult time.”

The former Smash Mouth lead vocalist had previously received a diagnosis of cardiomyopathy, a type of heart disease which can cause breathlessness, swollen legs and feet and a bloated stomach.

Two years ago, Steve Harwell quit the band after going on a “chaotic” onstage rant.

In 2021, the band’s representative revealed that the frontman had been dealing with “long-term medical issues over the last eight years.”

A friend of Steve explained that the video of him acting weird on stage was “taken out of context”

During his last performance at the Big Sip beer and wine festival at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in Bethel, New York, Steve had suffered numerous symptoms directly linked with his at-the-time medical situation.

Videos on social media of Steve’s performance had gone viral, which showed Steve slurring and threatening the audience as well as making rude gestures.

However, a friend of the singer explained that it was “taken out of context”, describing it to the New York Post as an “episode” onstage.

“This unfortunate recording has now been taken out of context and his ailments used against him to paint him as someone who he isn’t,” they said.
