Strictly's Oti Mabuse vows to 'get out of comfort zone' after needing approval

Strictly Come Dancing star Oti Mabuse has spoken candidly about her struggles with seeking approval from others.

The gorgeous star appeared tonight (Match 14) on BBC One’s Big Red Nose Day challenge, where she is taking on the treacherous journey to the summit of Cairn Gorm Mountain in the Scottish Highlands for Comic Relief.

Appearing alongside fellow hikers Rylan Clark and Emma Willis, the pair were seen kitted out in their hiking gear and sent off on the journey by local bagpipers as crowds cheered them on.

But as the pair reached their first checkpoint and sat down for a well-earned rest, the trio began discussing their motivation for taking part in the show.

When asked by Emma, Oti revealed she is channeling her own catchphrase “2023, 2020 me,” explaining: “I want to challenge me to do new things, to get out of my comfort zone of being scared of thing. I really wanted to. Pushing ourselves.”

She went on: “My thing was opinions and approval and I really don’t care this year. I’m focusing on being a better me.”

Emma Willis joined in, admitting that she also has demons when it comes to fear.

“I’m quite fearful but I’m realizing that I’m missing so much because of fear stress and worry and anxiety.”

Rylan soon joined in the candid chat, opening up about the difficulties he’s faced the last few years having navigated a divorce.

“The last few years my whole life completely changed – and sort of the year after it happened I just wasn’t in the best place.

“And now that I’ve gone back to feeling normal, I thought say yes to things you wouldn’t normally say yes to.”

The challenge saw Emma, Oti and Rylan take on wild camping, and – equipped with ice axes and crampons – battle the ever-changing elements.

The trio spent three days and two nights hiking over the brutal landscape with no roads and little shelter.

Setting off from Braemar, the group became completely self-sufficient, relying only on the provisions they can carry with them.

Rylan, 34, admitted before filming that he doesn’t exactly see himself as a Bear Grylls-style outdoors extraordinaire.

He said: “I’ve never been camping in my life. I’ve never slept in a tent. I have never worn camping attire. The only camping I do is camping it up on a Saturday night!”

He continued: I think the hardest part for me throughout this entire challenge is going to be… the entire challenge.”
