The OC ‘banned female orgasms’ and rejected major Hollywood star over ‘acne’

The OC rejected a major Hollywood star over his “acne” and banned female orgasms, a new book claims.

The legendary teen show, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary, has been exposed in the new book Welcome to the OC: The Oral History. Chris Pine was up for the leading role of Ryan Atwood, which was eventually given to Ben McKenzie. He remained in the show for all four seasons.

Future GQ’s International Man of the Year Chris Pine, however, was rejected as his skin problems were deemed “insurmountable” by show bosses. Casting director Patrick Rush claimed: “We saw Chris Pine, who was really good.

“I hate saying this, but it’s the truth: Chris Pine was at the age where he was experiencing really bad skin problems. And it was at that point where it looked insurmountable. And as a kid who grew up with horrible skin, it just broke my heart. But Chris Pine’s fine now. He’s all right.”

Chris would, of course, go on to land roles in everything from Star Trek to Don’t Worry Darling. He used Accutane to help heal his skin and branded it a “miracle drug”, admitting he had “really awful skin as a teenager”.

But other stars did manage to get away with it. Anna Stern star Samaire Armstrong revealed: “I had the worst acne back then, to the point where the director of photography was literally like, ‘You need to see the dermatologist. I’m having a really hard time lighting you.’

“In some episodes I have a giant beauty mark. It was because I had a pimple that would not go away,” she revealed.

Acne wasn’t the only thing banned from set. Fox executives are claimed to have objected to characters smoking, and showing any female orgasms. Executive producer Stephanie Savage claims the female orgasm “was not fair game”.

She added: “Showing female pleasure of any kind was problematic.” One line, in which Summer would tell Seth he could “lie there like a buffet and she’d serve herself”, was even cut from the script.

It comes after former OC star Rachel Bilson confirmed she’d never had an orgasm through sex until the age of 38. Speaking to comedian Whitney Cummings on her podcast Broad Ideas, things got intimate fast.

Whitney said: “I’m not on birth control, my sex drive… by the way, I’m going to say this wild thing. To say: I have not had an orgasm from sex until I went off birth control. Never had it in my life until I turned 40… But I could do it with my hands.”

While Rachel added: “I was the same as you. It didn’t happen for me until I was about 38. Isn’t that crazy?”

Fox did allow one lesbian storyline which proved majorly controversial at the time, with the network going “to war with itself” after complaints flooded in. Love scenes in general proved rather uncomfortable.

Chris Carmack revealed a very awkward encounter with the mum of Mischa Barton, Nuala, while shooting a famous love scene. He revealed: “We did our rehearsal and I rolled over in bed and looked next to me and there was Mischa’s mom standing right behind me.

“And I said: ‘Oh hey mom’. And the whole crew died laughing. I didn’t know that she was there in this uncomfortable moment. She was looming over the bed and the crew is watching – what’s going to happen?”
