The One Show's Alex Jones forced to stop BBC show as she suffers nasty coughing fit

The One Show host Alex Jones suffered a nasty coughing fit while introducing the BBC One chat show on Friday night (February 3) – and it got so bad that she had to halt the show.

It was barely a minute into the programme on Friday when the coughing was so persistent that poor presenter was forced to pause the show and catch her breath on-air.

And it rendered Welsh host unable to deliver her segment as she was having to focus on fighting for air in between coughs.

The show descended into coughing chaos right after co-star Ronan Keating told viewers about actress Sheridan Smith appearing on the show.

Ronan said: “Joining us tonight is someone who knows all about starring in gripping dramas.

“The brilliant Sheridan Smith will be here to tell us about taking on the role of Shirley Valentine in a new one-woman show.”

But Alex was hit by a hacking cough which left her apologising to viewers as she said: “I’m sorry, I’m sorry.”

She couldn’t help seeing the funny side of it though, because she started giggling at the gaffe before trying to press on with her script.

Alex began “And somebody else is guaranteed to put a smile on your face tonight…” before coughing again and continuing: “Is stand-up comedian Sean Walsh. He’ll be here to tell us…”

It was at that point that Alex lost composure and burst out laughing with co-star Ronan, who tried to steady the ship in the studio as Alex cleared her throat.

Eventually, she asked her crew for help when she asked: “Has anybody got water?” before Ronan pointed her to the glass of water on the table in the studio.

Safe to say, she reached straight for it and it seemed to help her throat, so when she finished the segment, she declared: “We got there!”.

The One Show airs weeknights on BBC One at 7pm
