Top ITV boss hands over his own phone as Phillip Schofield investigation continues

One of ITV’s top bosses has admitted that he gave his own phone to authorities as part of the investigation into Phillip Schofield.

Director of Television at ITV Kevin Lygo said that the team had gone through his texts emails and WhatsApp messages as part of the inquiry.

It comes after an internal investigation was launched at the broadcaster after Phillip Schofield’s dramatic departure from This Morning in May.

Initially leaving due to the pressure from rumours he and co-star Holly Willoughby had fallen out off-screen, Phillip later admitted to an affair with a much younger colleague on the show.

He also confessed that there were allegations of a “toxic” work culture at the iconic ITV morning show.

Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Kevin said that bosses at the broadcaster were equally confused.

“What’s been going on? There’s things we need to know. All these rumours and everything flying around and we thought, ‘We need to get to the truth of what’s gone on,” he said.

Lygo said that an independent inquiry into the broadcaster, who has been thorough including taking director’s phones.

He added that he could have refused to give up his phone for privacy reasons, but opted to share his information for the sake of the report.

“So everything is available, lots of interviews, everything possible,” he said.

He added: “The most important thing is to get facts and truth, not a hasty judgement”.

Lygo said that pressures from the press and social media started to creep in, but he fought back.

Kevin also revealed that he believed that the full report would likely be revealed in September, but people needed to be patient.

Phillip, 61, left the show in May, before admitting to the affair with the colleague whilst he was married to his ex-wife Steph.

Earlier in the year, the Dancing on Ice host and the runner will be questioned by Jane Mulcahy KC, who has been left in charge of the inquiry.

A source told The Sun on Sunday that the inquiry will get in touch with everyone involved in the allegations.

“It will focus on what happened before and after he was first given work experience on the set of This Morning. And it will also seek to establish who knew what and when. As well as speaking to current staff, it will also invite former employees to come forward with information,” the insider said.
