Absolutely Fabulous star claims her ‘haunted’ country house had ‘portal for lost souls’

Julia Sawalha has claimed her old country house was haunted by ghosts – and had a “portal for lost souls”.

The English actress said she is a firm believer in the supernatural and had ‘lost souls wandering around’ her old Somerset home. The 55 year old – who starred in eerie BBC drama Jonathan Creek – claimed her property was haunted by a previous owner who had gone “slightly mad because his wife passed away in childbirth”.

Sawalha, also known for Ab Fab and Press Gang, describes herself as a “clairaudient” – someone who hears ghosts. However, she refuses to use the words “ghosts”, “haunted”, and “possessed”. “I don’t call them ghosts, I call them spirits. Ghosts are silly, silly, silly names”, she told the RHLSTP podcast.

“I’m clairaudient, not clairvoyant, so I hear. I have seen [spirits] I’ve seen one when I was about 13 and in the house I lived in in Somerset. I don’t say haunted, and I don’t say possessed. There was a well… underneath my kitchen floor which I wasn’t aware of and there are two ley lines that cross it.

“This was after many, many, many goings on that were just getting too much for me and I lived there on my own. Like latches being bent back and I’d have to have a pair of pliers by the door to bend them back so I could lock the door at night. Thumping on the ceiling, balls bouncing down… Just lots of things going on. Doors rattling.

“So I went to a medium and she said that I have this well under the floor and these ley lines cross it and it’s a portal for lost souls. So they were lost souls wandering around my house.” She continued: “But also, the man who used to live there, he was the one that was there all the time, and I knew that and I had the deeds to the house.

“I went to see a neighbour who knew this guy, called Mr Flowers, and I changed the name back to Flowers Cottage in respect of him, hoping that he would calm down a bit. And he had gone slightly mad because his wife had passed away in childbirth. My boyfriend at the time, before he dumped me, he saw her lying in our bed.

Julia describes herself as a “clairaudient”

“I was driving to Bath and he rang me up and said ‘are you driving to Bath?’ and I said ‘yes’, and he said ‘because I’ve just seen you in bed’. And he’s like… No spirituality at all. He saw the ghost. Everyone that came to visit me in that house, after I sold that house, said ‘oh yeah it was really haunted, it was a lovely house but we hated it there’.”
