Anne Hathaway hates being called Anne as Emma Stone begs ‘don’t call me Emma’

Anne Hathaway has admitted she doesn’t like being called by her name and would rather people used “Annie”.

Fellow actress Emma Stone recently confessed that she would love to be known by her real name, saying in an interview when asked whether she’d correct a fan who called her that instead of Emma: “No. That would be so nice. I would like to be Emily.”

And it seems she isn’t the only one in Hollywood going around with a moniker they aren’t entirely comfortable with. Back in 2021, Anne confessed that in her own life, the only person who called her Anne was her mum – and that was only when she was “really mad at me”.

The Devil Wears Prada beauty was on Jimmy Fallon’s TV show and explained that when she was 14 she did an advert and was asked what she wanted her name to be as she collected her SAG card. She said it should be her actual name, Anne Hathaway.

“And so that seemed like the right choice, but it never occurred to me that for the rest of my life people would call me Anne,” she said. “The only person who ever calls me Anne is my mother and she only does it when she’s really mad at me. Like, really mad! And so every time I step out in public and someone calls my name, I think they’re going to yell at me.”

The star said that people she worked with on movies would come up with “workarounds” on set, explaining that “no one is comfortable calling me Anne ever”. “It doesn’t fit, I’m an Annie,” she said. “And so people call me ‘Miss H’, people call me ‘Hath’, so feel free to call me anything but Anne!”

Emma revealed this week that she used Emma because her real name was taken by another actress. It came out as she and her The Curse co-star Nathan Fielder chatted to the Hollywood Reporter, as the actor said: “Her name’s Emily, but she goes by Emma professionally.”

The actress said she would like to be referred to as Emily, and explained: “It’s just because my name was taken (by another actress in SAG). Then I freaked out a couple of years ago. For some reason, I was like, ‘I can’t do it any more. Just call me Emily’.”
