Fans of Antiques Roadshow were left sidetracked during the latest episode as a guest showcased a “Muff Chain” on the show.

The popular BBC programme was back for another instalment on Sunday night (March 17) leaving fans excited with what was in store. To celebrate St Patrick’s Day, presenter Fiona Bruce headed to Londonderry with her experts in tow.

During the show, a guest bought in a rare chain that was previously owned by her aunt. When asked by expert Joanna Hardy if she was aware of the history of the chain, the guest wasn’t too sure but explained that it had been a part of her family since the 1950s.

Joanna said: “It’s nearly 200 years old! It’s a belcher link chain or we call it a muff chain.

The ‘Muff Chain’ caused quite a stir on the show

“And a muff chain is literally when they would have the gold chain and at the end they would attach it to a muff. And you can see this beautiful decoration work, it’s very light in weight,” she added.

Joanna also explained that the chain was light in weight due to the shortage of gold during that period of time. However she was impressed that the chain still had length as it would have likely been chopped up to make other pieces.

Joanna explained where the chain was from

But once fans heard the word, “muff” from Joanna they lost all focus and rushed over to X formerly known as Twitter to have a giggle. One amused fan wrote: “Ok, you got my attention #MuffChain.”

Another penned: “A gold muff chain. That you attach to your muff. Is that a euphemism”

Stating how much she thinks it could make, Joanna gave her valuation. She said: “So at auction because these items are so popular, you can be looking at about £5,000.”

The guest replied: “Wow! That’s a shock. That’s a big shock!” But she also explained that she was pleasantly surprised by the figure that Joanna gave.
