BBC Radio 2 DJ Steve Wright’s heartache from struggling to find love to show axe

Steve Wright experienced plenty of heartache before his death.

Fans are mourning the loss of the legendary DJ, who passed away at 69. Known for his afternoon show on Radio 2, Steve was a favourite among listeners.

Despite his success, Steve’s dedication to his work left him little time for personal romance. His marriage ended 25 years ago, and he admitted in a 2019 interview with The Mirror that his busy schedule left no time for a new partner.

“I work on an afternoon show on the BBC and I do a love songs show at the weekend and it means that I do a lot of interviews and I prep a lot and I write a lot,” he told the publication. “So I have to work all the time.”

Steve was known for his private lifestyle, living just a short walk from Broadcasting House in central London. Despite presenting Top of the Pops in the 1980s, he never sought further TV fame, valuing his privacy.

“I don’t do a great deal of TV so I’m not recognised much,” he previously said. Steve married Cyndi Robinson in 1985. However, his marriage to US-born Cyndi ended in 1999 when they decided to live separately. During the height of his career, Steve spent three hours on air five days a week.

He spent an extra two hours in the studio on Sundays for his Love Songs show, leaving little time for romance. In 2022, after 23 years, his weekday afternoon slot was axed in one of the station’s biggest schedule changes.

“Sometimes people don’t want you,” Steve admitted as he left BBC studios, but confirmed he’d still work at Radio 2. He added: “I’ve been offered loads of stuff at the BBC and I’m staying at Radio 2.

“What it actually means for me is rather than working six days a week, I’ll be working maybe two and a half days a week.” Steve, named the BBC’s fifth highest-earning presenter in 2018-19 with earnings between £465,000 and £469,000, had up to eight million listeners in 2015. When asked if he thought he was indispensable, he simply said: “No. I don’t think I am indispensable at all.”
