BBC star almost eaten alive by 14 foot alligator in scary near-death experience

Blue Peter star Gethin Jones was almost eaten alive by an alligator.

The 46-year-old, on the show from 2005 to 2008, said he still has the scars after being attacked by the 14ft beast. Asked this week about the closest he’d come to death, Gethin said: “I have a scar on my ankle from when an alligator attacked me in a Louisiana swamp.

“Apparently it wasn’t hungry, otherwise I wouldn’t have survived.” The attack took place when Jones tried to “pick up” the beast. He reckoned it had a chance to eat him, adding he thought at the time: “If he wants to eat me now he will.”

Speaking about other dangerous encounters, the daredevil added: “I’m a fan of the rough-and-ready experience and I’ve camped in plenty of dangerous places. In Kenya, I had near misses with hippos and later a lion passing my tent at night.”

it comes after Gethin was told to “make himself useful” after an item in his show’s studio left BBC Breakfast presenters Naga Munchetty and co-host Charlie Stayt confused. The duo were speaking to Sara Cox and Gethin to preview their show – which airs directly afterwards – when the unusual item caused a stir.

After Sara and Gethin told BBC viewers what they can expect to see later in the morning, Charlie asked: “Is that a teapot, that little thing there in the middle of the flowers there? I was thinking is that a tiny teapot?”

Sara responded: “It is a tiny teapot, would you like it for your birthday maybe? We could get it over to you.” Gethin interjected: “I thought it was a watering can,” as Charlie could be heard agreeing in the background.

Naga chimed in: “Well, Sara now thinks she can give away stuff from the Morning Live studio just to anyone willy nilly.” Sara joked: “Yep, were going to be auctioning all of this off later.” Closing the preview, Welshman Gethin declared: “It’s a watering can, see. Right, I’d better water the plants.” And back over in the Breakfast studio, Naga responded: “Yeah, make yourself useful, Gethin.” It prompted Charlie to quip: “Water? He’s never even seen it before!”
