Blade Runner and Knives Out star M Emmet Walsh dies aged 88 as tributes pour in

M Emmet Walsh has died at the age of 88, his agent has confirmed.

The veteran American actor starred in over 200 films, including Ridley Scott’s 1982 classic sci-fi hit Blade Runner. He also appeared in Knives Out (2019) alongside Daniel Craig.

Walsh who also starred in My Best Friends Wedding and appeared in over 200 TV programmes, died on Tuesday (March 19) after suffering a cardiac arrest, confirmed his manager Sandy Joseph.

The Metro reported that the actor passed away at Kerbs Memorial Hospital in St. Albans, Vermont. Tributes to the star have flooded in from fans on social media.

One fan on X wrote: “M. Emmet Walsh was one of the ultimate THAT GUY actors. Always loved seeing him pop up in anything, whether it was Blade Runner, Knives Out, Blood Simple, or even Christmas with the Kranks. Rest well, sir, you rock.”

His biggest claim to fame was starring alongside Harrison Ford in Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, with Walsh playing Captain Bryant. Another fan-favourite was Knives Out in 2019, with Daniel Craig.

Fans may also recall Walsh having a starring role in Steve Martin;s film The Jerk and the Romeo and Juliet that included Leonardo DiCaprio. In more recent times, he worked with Whoopi Goldberg on the Western film Outlaw Posse.

The New York star made numerous appearances in some popular TV programmes during his time on the small screen. They include, Frasier, The X Files, NYPD, American Gigolo and Starsky and Hutch.

Walsh hadn’t always set his sights on becoming an actor, in fact he attended Clarkson University opting to study business administration. After finishing his exams, he headed to Hollywood in search of a new career.

In 1977, he hit the big time when he landed his first big role in a hockey comedy film Slap Shot. Within a year he landed his next big break as movie directors hired him for a Straight Time. And the rest as they say, is history.
