Brian Blessed wrestled 48st gorilla – and said huge female primates fancied him

Brian Blessed says he went ape and wrestled a 48st gorilla he befriended at a zoo.

The bushy-bearded actor said he shares a special connection with the hairy beasts. But it’s the female ones he really has trouble with as they find him “sexy”.

Brian, 87, said: “There used to be one in Surrey, a big bull gorilla called Gurgis, who was about 48 stone and I used to wrestle him. I used to make him laugh a lot. Sometimes I used to pretend Gurgis was hurting me and all the female gorillas used to come running. I was only acting.

“The female gorillas used to sit with me. You had to empty your pockets as before you know it they’ve got your glasses and are wearing them. But female gorillas always found me sexy.”

The 87-year-old admitted he even had to tell them off when they tried to check out his manhood: “They used to try and grab you and they know how to unzip. The universal word to tell them to stop is, ‘Ah, ah’, like a warning.”

Maybe it’s not a huge surprise given that Brian played Clayton in Disney’s Tarzan, but who knew he’d take to the role so well!

The shouty Flash Gordon star says he is still fit 25 years after becoming the oldest man ever to reach the North Magnetic Pole on foot in 1999. He added: “I lift 300lb of weights and bench press.”
