Bruce Willis’ wife issues ‘no more joy’ correction on star’s dementia battle

Bruce Willis’ wife had something to say about claims her husband has “no more joy” to experience – and explained it’s actually a far cry from the truth.

Emma Heming Willis, 45, is helping to care for Bruce, 68, as he battles frontotemporal dementia after initially receiving a diagnosis of aphasia. The action hero has been forced to retire from acting, but Emma says he’s got much more of life to experience.

In a statement posted to social media, Emma responded to headlines that claimed “there is no more joy” in Bruce. She penned: “That is far from the truth. I need society, and whoever’s writing these stupid headlines, to stop scaring people.

“Stop scaring people to think that once they get a diagnosis of some kind of neurocognitive disease that that’s it, it’s over, let’s pack it up, nothing else to see here, we’re done. No. It is the complete opposite of that.”

She added: “What I’ll share is what I say to my children, which (is) it’s important to just meet them where they’re at and not hold onto what isn’t, but what is, because there’s great beauty and sweetness and loving and joy out of that.” She admitted “two things can be true at the same time”, like grief and love, sadness and connection, trauma and resilience.

She explained the effect doom and gloom claims have on future caregivers, writing: “Care partners are already having a tough go in the support department. These headlines that paint this constant doom and gloom picture of dementia are harmful to them as they try to build their support unit around them. Or could sway a person who is wanting to help, the other way.

“I just ask you to consider reframing this negative narrative around dementia. That would be so kind and generous to the next care partner and their loved one.”

Bruce was initially diagnosed in February 2023, but the Die Hard actor isn’t the only celebrity battling dementia at the moment. TV legend Wendy Williams, 59, has been given the same diagnosis as Bruce – frontotemporal dementia and primary progressive aphasia.

A press release from her care team read: “Over the past few years, questions have been raised at times about Wendy’s ability to process information and many have speculated about Wendy’s condition, particularly when she began to lose words, act erratically at times, and have difficulty understanding financial transactions.

“The decision to share this news was difficult and made after careful consideration, not only to advocate for understanding and compassion for Wendy, but to raise awareness about aphasia and frontotemporal dementia and support the thousands of others facing similar circumstances.”
