Charlotte Church forced to downsize home as she’s ‘no longer a millionaire’

Charlotte Church says she’s no longer a millionaire and has swapped her mansion for a semi-detached house.

The 38-year-old singer shot to fame as a teen with her angelic classical singing voice. She then became a pop star and was earning millions with hits like Crazy Chick.

She bought her six-bedroom mansion, The Spinney, in Wales. The huge country home boasts a sprawling garden, a music room and a customised bookcase which opens into a hidden lounge area.

She also bought Rhydoldoh House in Powys, Wales, and turned it into a nature-based wellness retreat for women. She invested £1.5million into the project and had also started The Awen Project, a rural school for children.

But last month, she sold The Spinney and earned nearly £1million for it. “I am not a millionaire anymore,” she told Closer Magazine. “What mattered to me when I bought The Spinney is it was absolutely beautiful and close to the forest and it was a big mansion house.

“We had a school there for a bit and a studio. When it is used by the community, it makes sense, but when it is not used, it doesn’t. We want to be in the mainframe and be involved in life and what it feels like.”

She described the path to selling her mansion like a “fairy tale” that turned “twisted”. She continued: “When I made money, I did say to my dad when I was 14, ‘I am not sure about this showbiz stuff. I am really not having a good time’ and he was like, ‘Just stick at it as we don’t get these opportunities’.

“I did get to a stage in my teenage years, about 16 or 17, when I was like, ‘I don’t know if I can sing this s** t anymore’, but going around the world and singing in the biggest concert halls was phenomenal and I will be grateful for that experience.”

Charlotte revealed she was making music again and that she is able to do things that she is passionate about. She explained money has afforded her the opportunity to try new things.

Charlotte recently launched her first podcast, Kicking Back with the Cardiffians on BBC Sounds, with new episodes available weekly. On the podcast she discusses her Welsh heritage, family bonds, her working class identity and growing up in Cardiff.

She said of the new venture: “I grew up in a working-class household in Cardiff, and I feel fortunate to feel grounded in this city. There’s so much wisdom and beauty in my family’s stories, and I really wanted to explore where we feel like we most belong. It’s been a joy to begin capturing the stories of my favourite humans and I can’t wait to share the bits that are fit for broadcast.”
